Honey and Water: Is it Really that Good?

October 26th, 2007 | by the health blogger |

Every morning, or just about every morning, the first thing I do after waking up and using the bathroom (I guess you don’t need to know that part) is to make a honey + water drink. This may sound like an old wives tale or something your grandmother might have told you, but there is some serious truth behind the benefits of such a practice…I’m sure you’ll be surprised once you finish reading the information below.

First, how do you make the drink?
Simply add a teaspoon (or a tablespoon if you have a really sweet tooth) to a glass of natural mineral water (preferably room temperature) – which means NO tap water – that’s another subject that shall require an article within itself (stay tuned).
Stirring with a fork quickens the process – be patient now.
Then, open your mouth and consume the beverage ;)
Ok, now for the science part:

Did you know that honey has been shown to be far superior to conventional antibiotics in treating infections and without the negative side effects associated with antibiotic use.
It is amazing that the bacteria-killing properties of honey increase two-fold when diluted with water. Maybe that explains why newly born bees are nourished with diluted honey.
Also, when honey is mixed with water, a chemical reaction takes place resulting in the creation of hydrogen peroxide, the most powerful natural antibiotic. Unlike the hydrogen peroxide purchased in the pharmacy, the one produced by the above mixture is natural and therefore protects itself from being associated with conventional man-made antibiotics and their negative effects.

It only takes approximately 7 minutes for the honey + water mixture to diffuse into the bloodstream – ready to fight the bad stuff!

Apparently Mr. Hippocrates (430BC approx.) used two different honey mixtures, sometimes mixing the honey with vinegar and sometimes with water. He found that the honey water solution was far superior in treating wounds, though he probably did not know why.

Remember remember, use organic, unpasteurised (unpasteruized for my American readers :) ) and unfiltered honey – and to really be picky: try to source honey of locality, i.e. produced near to where you live (though this is not essential, it is very beneficial!)

So I guess you’ll be having a honey water beverage tomorrow morning?

Honey is very good to put on wounds. They heal quickly. I have even put a bandaid on over a layer of honey on a cut or blister.

Honey helps very much with stomach aches; I’ve been drinking honey in water every morning (religiously) for the past 3 months. Also, try it on your face (yes face) – especially if you’ve got breakouts. I apply it once or twice a week; it really helps with the healing process!

Are there any reasons that I should NOT drink honey/water when I’m pregnant? (Due in Dec)

Traditional doctors say that you shouldn’t feed honey to infants. Do you know why?

  7. By admin on Nov 9, 2007 | Reply

    Heather,

Thank you, that’s a good question.

It is perfectly safe during pregnancy for the mother to consume honey.

The reason doctors tell us not to feed infants honey is due to the fact that their digestive tract is not very acidic and therefore it provides a perfect environment for the botulinum spore to breed and as a result produce the botulism toxin.

Where as the digestive tract of an adult (including pregnant mothers) is acidic enough to inhibit the growth of the botulism toxin.

I’m planning to write another series of articles on honey which will be more in-depth and shall touch upon the subject of honey & pregnant mothers in more detail, stay tuned.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Best wishes with your pregnancy.

oh and is it good for the teeth?

    oh and one more thing
does it matter how much honey you add? because i like alot

  10. By admin on Dec 2, 2007 | Reply

    Sean,

Contrary to what many read, honey is fine for the teeth (that doesn’t mean u shouldn’t brush your teeth – lol).

It can affect how you feel (positively) as the brain is a big consumer of fructose (honey consists mainly of fructose – a type of carbohydrate).

It shouldn’t matter how much honey you add, as long as it mixes with the water and you don’t use the whole jar ;)

    take care.

i actually have one more question
ive been drinking quit alot of it now i just cant get enough of it, thats actually quit good i guess cause my diet is real bad, its sweet and tasty, today i brought a water bottle and honey to school and drank all day.
can the amount you drink affect u in any harmful way, like an OD on pills.

    Sean,

As with just about anything in life, moderation is the key.

For example, drinking water is very good, though too much can be detrimental to ones health due to the loss of minerals (i.e. through urination).

    Keep a balance.

    Hope that helps.

    take care.

    1. WILL HONEY BE USEFUL WITH HOT WATER (HOT MEANS ATLEAST U CAN DRINK)?
    2. WILL I BE ABLE TO GET REDUCE MY TUMMY THROUGH THIS?

That was a wonderful insight about honey and water. I wasn’t sure what the implications if i had to mix honey and water. I was told by someone thats its very good for health and it help to gain weight and good skin. Well then i am gonna try having it every morning.

  15. By admin on Dec 31, 2007 | Reply

    Vishu,

Honey with hot water does have some benefits. Whenever I have a sore throat, I drink hot water with honey and it instantaneously soothes my throat (though I do use quite hot water – be careful!).

Reducing your tummy? Sometimes people look for miracle cures and always want a one tablet/one pill/one diet cure, when in reality it usually takes a combined approach (i.e. diet & exercise) to combat fat, especially around the abdominal region.

Remember everyone is different and therefore a custom approach, involving trial and improvement, is required to achieve ones desired goal(s). If you would like more information please stay tuned as I shall be writing on the aforementioned topics in more detail soon. If you can’t wait till then do not hesitate to contact me via email.

    Take care.

Hi, I’ve gone thru the article and comments posted by nice people,
I have a questioin that If I am using 1 tablesppon of honey and 1/4 tablespoon of Cinnamon powder in a hot (drink able) glass of water for stomachache and digestivity + to reduce some FATS from Body, is it suitable? or is there any side effect?

  18. By admin on Jan 10, 2008 | Reply

    Hi Hussnain,

I have read before that drinking cinnamon with honey in hot water is beneficial for stomach ache, indigestion and reduction of body fat. A magazine in Canada, ‘Weekly World News’ (17 January 1995), gave a list of diseases that can be cured by this concoction. The three ailments that you have specified in your question were also in this list. The magazine claims that these have been researched by Western scientists, though I have not been able to get my hands on the actual publication to be able to verify the sources. However, having said that, the benefits of honey and cinnamon, whether consumed separately or together are numerous and outstanding! My advice, start off slowly (i.e. a small amount) and monitor yourself closely for a few days to a week, you should be fine. Thereafter taking this mixture daily should be okay. However do not substitute this information as medical advice, always check with your doctor.

Can I have a tablespoon of honey with a glass of warm water to relief from cold?
since it is very good antibiotic, so can I get any benefit out of that?

  20. By admin on Jan 15, 2008 | Reply

    Sumit,

It would be better to have honey in room temperature water. You would reap some benefits, but not anything instantaneous that would make your cold go away. Hot water and honey would soothe a sore throat quite well.

  22. By admin on Jan 18, 2008 | Reply

    Pallavi,

This is too much of a vague question and not that simple. If you are eating a diet where calorie intake is higher than calorie expenditure, then no you will not lose weight. Also not exercising is another factor which can, but not always, effect weight loss. There is no magic pill, sorry. You have to research and develop a lifestyle change.

Hi and thank you for the great articles.

please let me in on some info on GI, is it benificial for good heath. some health experts said it is good to implement a low GI diet as a part of a heathly eating plan as well as a great way to lose a few pounds a week.
Rosmary Conley repeatedly says this diet is great for the whole family. Is it suitible for the child aswell as the adult?
And please share any recipes for my sweet tooth cravings if you have them. I heard dark chocolate is better but how much is a little. One square piece or a few nibbles? What else can i have apart from dryed fruit cause i have had enough of dryed fruit. I used to be a fan of it and eat alot especially in my last pregnancy. Im now sick of it.

    Many thanks.

  24. By admin on Jan 23, 2008 | Reply

    Hi Amatullah,

The Glycemic Index (GI) diet is very good and beneficial for the health. It is a great way of losing weight both quickly and in a healthy manner. The diet is suitable for everyone. I would recommend going on the GL (Glycemic or Glycaemic Load) diet though, which includes everything from the GI diet but also takes into account the amount of food and its glycemic response.

Dark chocolate (85%+) is not only better but has more antioxidant activity than green tea! How much? Well that depends upon what satisfies you, but don’t over do it – moderation is key remember. Have normal fruit instead of dried fruit. Have you tried eating raw honey with banana? If I come across any good recipes that cater for the “sweet toothed” people I shall definitely post them up here.

Having a cheat food every now and then (and I mean every now and then) is okay, as long as you are following a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

    Hope that helps.

    Take care.

    Mrs. Wai,

You are right, different temperatures do have different effects. For example, hot water with honey is very soothing for a sore throat, where as room temperature water with honey is good for the stomach and digestive system. Remember to use real honey, not the honey that is pasteurised, filtered and from bees that are sugar-fed.

Hello… I’ve started a while ago this practice every morning. Thing is, after about a week or two, I began having mild diarrhea before having lunch. Is this some sort of a healing reaction since my body is starting to adjust to the regimen? Or is it because of something else? The episode happens everytime I try it again in the morning.

I have on question please, last year i had severe chickpox plus i have a histroy of eczema, eventhough the chickenpox left some holes on my face and white spots after a year, someone told my to apply honey to my face, So do i just apply it directly or add something to it because it is very sticky and sticks to some off my hair, but i don’t mind applying only honey
    Please help thanks

  48. By admin on Mar 29, 2008 | Reply

    Soleha,

Alot of people experience the benefit of jump starting their bowels with honey + water.

You can apply the honey directly to your face. Just make sure you use good quality honey (as described in the above comments) – i.e. unpasteurised, unfiltered, preferably of locality and organic. I know it is somewhat difficult to obtain good quality honey, but try your best.

In regards to your hair – tie it back or maybe gel it flat (the latter part was a joke).

Your eczema may be the result of an undetected allergy/food intolerance that you may not know of, look into proteolytic enzyme supplementation – I shall write an article about this subject soon, they will most definitely rid you of your eczema (God willing).

I had very bad hay fever and after proteolytic enzyme supplementation for one month, I was cured!

    Hope that helps :)

Every morning, i would add half cup of hot water to dissolve the honey before adding normal temperature water. This is because honey dissolve better in hot water. Would adding hot water to honey ‘kills’ off the nutrients of the honey?

  50. By the health blogger on Mar 29, 2008 | Reply

    James,

It is very likely that adding hot water (when you say hot, do you mean boiling hot?) will kill some of the benefits in the honey.

I advise that you use only room temperature water and stir with a fork, it will only take a couple of minutes longer.

It is still beneficial for the body.

I read a book which described and stated that hot drinks help dissolve lipids in the system.

Also, hot water + honey is very good for a sore throat (especially when it is drunk hot and not allowed to cool down – though don’t drink it so you burn yourself!).

“…and Kindly advise the proprtion as well. Another thing, Can a lady consume any of these drinks during & after her pregnancy. Thanks for your help.”

Approximately 1 teaspoon of honey for a standard sized cup (approx. 200-250ml). Use quarter of a lemon and a pinch of cinnamon.

This drink can be consumed during and after pregnancy – though I do advise you to seek advice from your doctor as your particular situation may be different to that of others. 83. By the health blogger on Jul 27, 2008 | Reply

    Dominic,

With hot water, it is likely that some of the benefits of the honey may be destroyed (depending upon the heat). Where as with the natural water (and by this I assume you mean room temperature or just cooler than hot) you would not experience this.

    Solevitas,

    Thank you for your comment.

I have not come across any scientific studies which expound upon the benefits of honey & milk in regards to alleviating bad period pains. However I have read from other peoples experiences that this mixture can be beneficial and in some cases, very effective even for dysmenorrhea (severe period pain).

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

I’m actually researching this topic and shall be writing an article on the subject soon.

I can tell you though that eating healthily and exercising have amazing effects on not just one’s period pain, but there overall health and wellbeing.

    Hope that helps :)

    Maya,

As I have repeatadly told people, there is no magic pill to rid you of your excess fat – well not yet anyway.

How much exercise are you doing? And is it a combination of resistance and cardio training?

How much do you eat? Do you eat enough carbs, protein and fats?

In relation to your Basal Metabolic rate (BMR – If you don’t know what this is, google it), are your calories in excess of your BMR or in a deficit?

Hope these points give you some direction into your fat loss endeavours.

    Samantha,

I have read many testimonials that honey has helped hair loss and hair growth problems. Though I have yet to come across any conclusive studies.
I came across this link which may be of interest to you:

    http://www.baldingblog.com/

Search the net for testimonials of people who have tried using honey for hair problems. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if honey or a concoction containing honey would help/benefit hair related issues.

    UPDATE:

I came across this research journal:

Al-Waili NS. Therapeutic and prophylactic effects of crude honey on chronic seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff (2001). Eur J Med Res. 2001 Jul 30;6(7):306-8.

And the results showed that “…patients showed subjective improvement in hair loss.”

A good way to improve your weight would be to increase your caloric intake a little above your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

Google to find out more info on BMR.

    Celina,

It works better with room temp. water as opposed to warm/hot water because the higher the temp. of the water, the more likely the beneficial properties of the honey will be destroyed (e.g. beneficial enzymes etc.)

Another good example is that of spinach, once it is cooked, the vitamin C content is considerably reduced, where as the vitamin A content becomes more bio-available (apparently).

    Hope that helps.

Honey, especially mixed with cinnamon, can cure a multitude of ailments. Honey is produced in all parts of the world. Scientists of today believe honey can be used without any side affects for a number of diseases. Honey is sweet but if taken in the right dosage as a medicine it won’t harm diabetic patients. It’s important to remember that these ten natural sweet cures haven’t been independently verified. These are homeopathic cures, many passed down from generation to generation. Many uses of honey mixed with cinnamon to cure ailments from heart disease, acne, hair loss, and gas. Focus on the top ten cures to try.
    1.
Arthritis is one disease that can be cured with honey. One part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and a teaspoon of cinnamon will make a paste that will noticeably reduce pain in a matter of a couple of minutes. Patients suffering from arthritis can take one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon once in the morning and again in the evening. It’s been said that taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. Copenhagen University tested their theory by giving patients a mixture of one tablespoon of hone and one half teaspoon of cinnamon before breakfast. The results were that within a week, 73 patients out of 200 were relieved of pain and within a month, arthritis patients could again walk without pain.
    2
Cholesterol is said to be treatable with honey. Mix two tablespoons of honey and three tablespoons of cinnamon in 16 ounces of tea. This mixture is said to reduce the level of cholesterol by ten percent within a short amount of time. As with arthritis, it is said that pure honey taken with food daily will reduce cholesterol levels. Along the same lines, using cinnamon and honey on bread and eaten at breakfast revitalized the arteries and veins leading to the heart and helpful towards preventing heart attacks.
    3
Men, pay attention! A mixture of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon made into a paste can help baldness and hair loss. Apply the paste before your shower and leave it on for approximately five to fifteen minutes then wash the hair.
    4
In India and Japan honey and cinnamon is said to help relieve gas, stomachaches and clears stomach ulcers at the root. If honey and cinnamon are taken before eating it helps digest even the heaviest of meals.
    5
Colds can be treated with honey. One tablespoon honey with ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon taken daily is said to cure most chronic coughs and clear the sinuses. You can also make up a mixture of honey, whiskey and lemon juice. If it doesn’t clear your cough, at least maybe you’ll sleep.
    6
Pimples, the curse for both young and old can be removed within two weeks if this remedy is applied. Make a paste of three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon. Put the pimples on before going to bed and wash it off the next morning.
    7
Now here’s a big one Weight loss. Twice daily, once at night, and one in the morning ½ hour before breakfast drink a cup of boiled hot water with honey and cinnamon. It’s been said that even the most obese patient can lose weight and drinking this mixture doesn’t allow the fat to accumulate in the body.
    8
Studies have shown that chronic fatigue can be helped by honey. One half tablespoon of honey in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon in the morning and in the afternoon will increase your vitality within a week.
    9
Infertility is a problem that ancient people in the Far East treated with honey. It was said to strengthen the semen of men. Two tablespoons of honey taken before bed is said to also correct impotency. A touch of cinnamon in one half teaspoon of honey and applied to the gums throughout the day will help a woman conceive. Mixing it with the saliva lets it slowly enter the body.
    10
Finally, bad breath is said to be helpful if gargled in the morning. One teaspoon of honey and cinnamon mixed in hot water is supposed to keep breath fresh all day.

    Thanks

    Pollyanna,

    Thank you for your comment.

About the cinnamon+honey drink, I have read about this too. I have yet to find any conclusive evidence to support such claims, also about its safety, it should be fine. Hot water + honey does not equal like botox.

Imagine eating 5000 calories a day, and expecting to lose weight by drinking this concuction. Make any sense?

From my research and readings, having honey and water does stimulate colon (intestine) contractions and hence can make you go to the bathroom, which is always a good thing!

    Hope that helps :)

    So the questions are?
BEFORE HONEY IS SOLD ON TO THE RETAILER, IS IT LABORATORY TESTED FOR PESTICIDE CONTENT?.

    Hi Anand,

I’ve been asked this question soo many times that I have taken the hint and shall be writing something related to fat loss.

    Some quick tips for you:

    - Workout how much you consume daily (i.e. calories) and how much you burn, is there a deficit or surplus? If you are eating more than you are burning then you are not helping yourself at all.
    - Don’t follow stupid diets that tell you to stop eating fat or carbohydrates. Remember, moderation is key to just about everything.
    - Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods where possible (e.g. instead of white bread have brown bread, instead of white rice have brown rice etc.)
    - Exercise and make sure you have a variety of different activities (e.g. not just running, but also resistance training, other sports etc.)

Unfortunately I cannot do justice to your question as I would end up writing the article now and it is not possible to do so at the moment. Please visit back regularly and you may see an in-depth article series on fat loss.

    Hope that helps :)

Hi I started taking honey and warm water every morning some months to help with constipation and to improve my skin. I noticed that my stomach problems are better, though not really for my skin.

    I have 2 concerns:
    1) I have heard about hot water destroying honey properties, but I also heard that it’s best to drink warm water in the morning to detoxify the liver, so I normally mix honey with 3/4 glass of room temp water, then add a bit of hot/boiling on top to warm up the mixture. Would that make a difference, or is that the same anyway?

    2) There was a period of time, about a week or two, when I ran out of honey and just didn’t have the time to buy it. I noticed that I was feeling poorly that week, in terms of stomach and mood. I’m wondering if that’s psychological (placebo effect of honey) or is honey actually addictive????

    Thanks for answering these questions!

  136. By the health blogger on Feb 18, 2009 | Reply

    Hi MLin,

    1) Basically it is the same. From my readings, consumption of warm/hot water is some how linked to getting rid of fats in your system (trying to find the book in my library but have not been successful yet – will keep you updated).

    2) From what I know, honey is not addictive. However, honey is amazing at helping stomach problems! Also, the brain is the biggest consumer of sugars, hence there may be some link, not saying definitely, but maybe.

By the way, where do you get your honey from? Supermarket? Health shop?

And also, when you say to help your skin what do you mean? Do you have problem skin like acne? If so, please read my acne articles, hope they help.

  137. By MLin on Feb 18, 2009 | Reply

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply! Well, I get my honey from the supermarket, nothing fancy. It’s called white honey (sometimes I get something called clover/alfafa?), but I make sure to get the unpasteurised version.

So, would you know the temperature at which honey properties start to get destroyed by heat? Would be nice to get the optimal benefits of both honey AND warm water!

I heard that honey helps the skin in the long run, an inside out kind of process if drinking it and not applying it directly. Thanks, I’ll check out your acne article.

By the way, I’m not sure if honey helps the teeth, but Colgate has a honey toothpaste out. Tastes so good!

  138. By the health blogger on Feb 19, 2009 | Reply

    Hi MLin,

    Thanks for your reply :)

Are you from Singapore? I remember when I went there for holiday they had Raw honey in the supermarket, I was SOOOOO extremely happy. It’s hard to buy here in the UK – though hopefully very soon I shall be selling some on my site :)

Honey definitely helps the skin! The properties can start dying off at approx. 40 degrees centigrade (enzymes started to die), though I need to clarify this.

Colgate has a honey toothpaste? Where? LOL! Have you got an online link for it? Did you know, before the creation of the refrigerator, people (especially in Arabia) would cover their meat and other foods in honey to preserve (six months at a time)!

Clover honey is produced by bees which feed primarily on the nectar of clover plants, that’s the only difference (and maybe the taste too).

What is your response. We have been mixing the honey with boiled water and heard many stories about this too. Our toddlers sleep pattern has changed alot, quite restless and she also seems to have some abdominal issues which we cannot resolve. Hi all!

So I am trying to detox just to cleanse the system and maybe lose a few pounds. I tried the honey and water just for today and have not seen any results yet (not sure how long it takes to kick in). For breakfast I just had green tea with honey (2 teaspoons each time) and for lunch and dinner had water and honey. I have been drinking tons of water throughout the day as well. I plan on doing this for only 3-4 days. Is this an appropriate way to detoxify your body in just a few days? Should I be adding lemon to my drinks as well?

Are there any better methods for detox in just a few days? Also, I’m scared that I will gain double back the weight of what I lose during detox.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    Kimberly,

No this is not an ideal way to detox in just a few days.

You will not lose weight just by drinking this formula – no way! Please read the previous comments for further explanation.

If you want to detox your body, you have to prepare it first, by improving your diet (if not already healthy) and then slowly employing different methods (such as fasting) to compliment your healthy lifestyle.

It makes no sense to treat your body like rubbish and then expect to heal or improve it in 3 days – doesn’t make sense does it?

Consistency is key, don’t go to any extremes as you wont be able to handle it – no one really can.

    Hope that helps :)

    Hello,
It is a very nice article.
I have a clarification here, if this mixture is to be taken on an empty stomach does the honey cause a sudden spike in blood sugar.

Can this mixture be taken just before going to bed?

Sorry if it is a repeated question. Thanks for your time.

No doubt about it! Honey has always been one of my preferred sweeteners. I’ve never tried the water and honey but I do have green tea and honey every morning. It’s delicious and sensible!

I used to love honey & water as a daily pick-me-up, however, a friend of my dad’s used to practise drinking honey and water everyday for 20 years and at age 40 he got diabetes. Then I researched on the link between honey and diabetes and so far there have been extensive studies conducted and none is conclusive. Ever since I heard of his diabetes due to honey consumption, I now drink honey and water very sparingly, perhaps with a meal or before I retire at night…say once a week. I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry? ;) Now I concentrate more on lemon + hot water upon rising.

Hi, I have a question regarding Khalid’s post where it mentions reducing the level of cholesterol with honey+cinnamon+tea. Does it matter if I choose any kinds of tea eg. green tea?

    Thanks

Also, will storing honey in the fridge (to keep away the ants) spoil the quality and the beneficial factors in it?

  168. By the health blogger on Aug 15, 2009 | Reply

    Rain,

Both are good! Lemon has the added benefit of vitamin C as well as other benefits (google it to find out more).

If you like it with Lemon, continue using Lemon.

    Hi,

I have been drinking hot/lukewarm water daily 4 glasses in morning. Then after emptying my stomach, i brush teeth and clean my tounge. I do this intensionally, so that I throw up and the acid in my throat region comes out.

After I heard from a friend of mine that drinking honey with water hepls in weight loss, I have started taking honey in little hot water( 4 glasses with a teaspoon of honey).
Somehow I am finding that my bowel is not getting cleaned totally. SO I m not sure if this is due to honey I have started taking these days (Or I am taking curd with sugar quite regularly these days in afternoon or evening). So I am just trying to find out if honey is not affecting my digestion.

Will adding lemon will help that.
Also if u hv any suggestion for reducing weight, pls mail me. I Donn do much physical xercise, but walk daily for 3 miles and do pranayam 3-4 times a week.

    Thanks.

    Geets,

Its very unlikely to be as a result of the honey.

  171. By the health blogger on Aug 29, 2009 | Reply

    Catherine,
No it won’t spoil the honey.

    Catherine,
Greent tea is obviously better as it has higher antioxidants etc.

Other alternatives which boast high antioxidant activity include white tea, red tea (rooibos) etc.

  173. By the health blogger on Aug 29, 2009 | Reply

    Sonu, not necessarily reducing heat.

But reducing acne – a possiblity as it makes you empty your stomach.

  174. By the health blogger on Aug 29, 2009 | Reply

Teff, its VERY unlikely that your father’s friend developed diabetes due to honey and water.

Was your father’s friend healthy – i.e. exercising regularly and eating generally healthy?

As you said, the studies have been extensive and not conclusive.

No it shouldn’t cause a sudden spike in blood sugar – though check with your doctor if you have any blood sugar issues.

    Dear Admin,

i do love to consume honey. Usually with green tea and lemon. Just yesterday a nutrition specialist told me that putting honey into hot water changes its biochemical properties and lets it become poisonous for the human body. True? What is your opinion on that? Thank you Alex

I do know that the chemical properties change, however becoming poisonous – i’ve never heard this before.

Hi. Im currently 6 months pregnant with our my first baby. I have been drinking one tbsp honey, 1/2 lemon mixed into 1.5 L filtered water daily. I have been told that lemon may not be good for my baby. Something about it hindering the strength of my baby’s teeth in future. Is this true?

PS. I cant drink honey and water on its own (dont like the taste) so i added the lemon to taste

  189. By the health blogger on Dec 8, 2009 | Reply

    Hi Sirfar,

I have been told that too much vitamin C can be detrimental to the baby’s teeth formation, however have yet to come across conclusive evidence.

Either way, 1/2 a lemon should be totally fine! Double check with your doctor/physician to be safe.

Hi, I was diagnosed with achlorhydria and have been reading a lot about Manuka honey. I’m considering drinking manuka honey with water, however I’m becoming concerned about the botulism toxin. Although I have been drinking tea with 1tsp honey and have not had a problem. Will I have a problem if I drink 2 tbs of manuka honey and water?

Is it okay if I drink approx. 8oz hot water with a 1/2 squeezed lemon before bed and one cup in the morning? Or one or the other?…

Also, is it more beneficial if i put a 1tbsp of Honey in the mix?

    Thanks.

Also, they can choke on the honey because it is too thick. But when they get much older, you can make some toast and instead of butter you can put honey on it. :) I love toast with honey. :)

    hi
i saw there few questions regarding relationship between water+honey and weight loss. you replied it requires comprehensive workout (diet+food) to reduce the weight.

atleast we know the proportionality of diet and exercise with weight. more exercise more weight loss. decrease decrease in weight.

would you please clear us that is specific relation of honey+water with weight. does it contribute in reducing the weight????

    hi,

thanks for the information. I like to know whether it is good to add in hot milk along with cornflakes and fruits for breakfast. does the hotness of the milk affects the property of the honey?

  200. By the health blogger on Jan 29, 2010 | Reply

The hotness of the milk could effect the beneficial properties of the honey, though it WON’T turn it into something poisonous.

  201. By the health blogger on Jan 29, 2010 | Reply

    Mukhtiar,

I have not come across any “evidence” suggesting that honey + water helps to reduce weight.

However, sometimes we need to try and test things on ourselves (within reasonable guidelines and safety of course) and see what result(s) we get.

    For example, ‘divy’ commented:

    hi,
normally i feel hungry around 8a.m… but after having honey+warmwater, i dnt feel hungry until 11a.m.. guess it helps me to reduce my weight too

Everyone’s experience is different and sometimes there aren’t scientific studies done on our chosen question(s) unfortunately, however we can listen to our body and see we benefit from anything.

I wasn’t able to get rid of my acne overnight! It took years of learning and trial and error/trial and improvement.

    Hope that clarifies.

    raje,

Your comment is too vague! Are you consuming enough fibre? How much water do you drink? etc…

  203. By the health blogger on Jan 29, 2010 | Reply

Rose, please refer to your physician/doctor.

Is it even healthy/safe to try and lose weight whilst pregnant?!

  204. By the health blogger on Jan 29, 2010 | Reply

    brwneyez, the drink sounds fine.

Adding honey to it will also be of benefit.

  205. By the health blogger on Jan 29, 2010 | Reply

    Merc,

    You need not worry.

I don’t see anything wrong with using more manuka honey.

However, refer back to your doctor/physician to be safe.
