Masturbation: It is NOT healthy for you, contrary to popular belief!

Please note, this article is based primarily upon my opinion and also various real life findings (e.g. emails from concerned readers, various forums and sites). Therefore I don’t have any “scientific” research to back these claims, however, the symptoms that occur to many are consistently recurrent. Remember, we don’t only have physical health to look after, we also have spiritual health which we need to tend to just as much! Most things in life have a benefit as well as some disadvantages. In some cases, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and in other cases the opposite is true; this is my opinion on this topic.

jkon579l.jpg

Yes, that’s right, I have chosen to write about a topic which is commonly perceived as taboo, though I know many will be intrigued and curious to read the information presented and learn the negative consequence of such an abhorrent practice.

So why am I writing this article? Well, mainly due to the fact that many uninformed individuals (no names) like to elucidate their opinions freely and willingly on this subject with very little to no knowledge whatsoever! I have come across countless articles and opinions stating how masturbation is “…a healthy practice…”, the more I saw these false comments, the more I felt the need to correct this misconception!

If you don’t know what masturbation is, well then I’m very surprised. Simply put, your having sex with yourself or more explicitly, with your hand! Want a more concise explanation, pick up an encyclopedia or do a google search.

This is inherently against the natural disposition of man, don’t worry I’m not going to give a sermon!

I have read in the past how masturbation can be more addictive than heroin, now that is serous!

You can get your fix whenever and just about wherever! You release the same chemical which makes you feel good when you take heroin (i.e. opioids), though in a lesser amount. (see this article: Internet Porn: Worse Than Crack?)

So what are the common effects of masturbation you ask?

Here’s a small list (though not an exhaustive one):

- Fatigue

- Lower back pain

- Thinning hair/hair loss

- Weak erection

- Premature ejaculation

- Groin/testicular pain

- Concentration and memory problems

- Sleep problems

This doesn’t mean that one shall experience all of these effects, though they are very common.

Did you know that every time you ejaculate, you lose approximately 3-5mg of zinc, that’s nearly a third of your RDA.

Zinc is one of the main minerals responsible for testosterone production, therefore less zinc, less testosterone etc.

I know some clever person out there is surmising that the same effects should occur when one has sexual intercourse, right?

Sorry to disappoint! When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect! Bet you didn’t know that?!

Do you really want to be a one-minute man and look like an idiot when you are with your partner? I thought not.

I advise those who masturbate regularly, to stop! Eat some Oysters (very high in Zinc) and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Fast, for fasting diminishes one’s sexual desires, unless of course you can get married or something and keep busy, “For idle hands make work for…”!

Please don’t believe the fallacy that these so-called experts proclaim! Masturbation is not healthy and is quite detrimental to put it mildly!

Well, I will support and agree with you. Before this I read some books about the disadvantages of masturbation. Besides that, the over sex activities also cause the same problem. This is what husband wife should pay attention on.

I almost cried when reading this people should be ashamed of themselves when people post questions on forums about masturbation problems people tend to brush it off as though its not true. “its healthy its healthy” no its not its for little punks. Everything is healthy in america homosexuality, expirinenting with drugs, making out with the same sex. Etc its no sense really only real men will benefit from this. And to those suffering from masturbation addiction then stay strong after friday it will be a week without masturbation for me. Im kicking this homo habit for good!!!

If you feel guilty then you are not really enjoying it are ya? If you are telling yourself that you wish you could stop on your way to the bathroom to wash your hands…then you probably should. YOU CAN DO IT! Plus…its better for you and your sex life latter on will be MUCH better.

    Dear Anonymous,

I have replied here so others may benefit from your questions and the consequent answers.

Please do not take these answers as the cure! They are simply some guidelines and advice, always refer to your physician/doctor.

Don’t worry I have changed your name to “Anonymous”. Answers to your questions:

Question 1. ” if i leave a subject for two weeks i might forget little details is this a memory problem?”

    Answer:

Not from what I can tell. This seems very normal, most people forget after a few days, so don’t worry!

Question 2. “if i stopped masturbating will my brain be cured as i have never masturbated”

    Answer:

I don’t see why not. The body has the ability to repair itself very quickly (especially when you are young and healthy)

Question 3. “and how much time the brain needs in order to be cured.”

    Answer:

Shouldn’t take long at all. Almost instantaneous hopefully.

Question 4. “what are the thing wich i need to eat or take to strengthen my memory”

    Answer:

This is somewhat of a subjective question, google that question and you should get a lot of information. Though things such as fruits, salads and some supplements (e.g. Ginko Biloba) would benefit.

You have nothing to worry about, just stop this bad habit and start living a healthier life.

You should most definitely be fine, don’t worry :)

Don’t feel guilty. My advise is to try to stop masturbating in small steps. Try it to do every second day for a month and then any third day and so on… This may help. You probably won’t get over it alltogether, the truth is I do not know anybody who does, but it gives you at least the feeling of more control

For all those poor people who suffer from masturbation and are struggling in misery everyday here is a little tip: MEDITATION. It will bring you salvation ;) … “Meditate, don’t masturbate.”

  26. lefty
    April 1, 2009 | 7:24 pm

Very good that this information is out. Thank you The Health Blogger. You speak the truth.

From my experience I can say, I am a passionate masturbator (lol, someone should name a song like this), but it is not funny at all. For these few seconds of bliss, I miss out on good erection, healthy body, healthy life,… pleasing my better half longer and more in the moment, my hair is thinner, falling, my skin gets dry, selfconfidence IS LOWER, discipline over oneself dimminishes after time, vital energy LOW…
Well I could go on about a few things more, but I think this is more then enough.
It is a serious problem, but like any other chalenge it can be disciplined. You have the power to do so,…
    few tips for beginners…
..don’t touch yourself on the genitals, stay off porn, socialize and get a woman or a man, enjoy the natural most healthy and most vital energy supplier known to man kind. Making love. Present fully on this act of bliss.
When you do that, even then, try not to ejaculate. Ejaculation is soncidered in some cultures energy of life. Well, I think we could all agree.
When you are in love making, on the physical level, your energy rises and many vitamins hormons etc. gets stronger and better in kvantity. Then the feeling of it is just not describable, it comes after time and devotion, or at first try, its possible.
So, when you maintain the high level of energy you can turn it into alot more then just an orgazm.
When you ejaculate, orgazm takes your energy and sends it to space, its lost from you. It has a relaxing effect, but IF you dont ejaculate, your energy builds, in the ways you cant possible imagine. IF you dont believe me, don’t. But you got nothing to lose and try. Ohh and dont give up after few trys, its a skill, and dont judge yourself if you cant hold it and just release it. Practise makes better practice.

Sorry for a long post, sure hope I shed some light on the topic.

    In Lak’ech and be well

Just wanted to mention that most of what was said if not all goes hand in hand with Islamic teachings where masturbation is completely forbidden.(I believe for both its effect on health and society)
BTW Alexxnom and everyone else, one of the purposes of prayer in islam (which are done 5 times a day and has aspects similar to meditation) is to prevent the foul acts and lead the person to good ones.

Yes, well, it’s a choice…think about it. No need to think I would say.

i agree with Bannakai islam is seriously the best way to stop any bad thing… if you even read about masturbation in islam you’ll find out that “Mohammed” messenger and beloved said its forbidden and if you do it with your right hand its like if you committed adultery with your “mother” with… left hands then with your sister… i think its a good reason that might let you stop it

this is just a thing of many about things like it in islam … good luck =]

    April 29, 2009 | 8:22 pm

    yes my question also

IS THERE DEFERENCE BETWEEN MUSTERBATION AND DOING SEX?

  33. alexxnom
    May 1, 2009 | 12:30 pm

I wanted to emphasize that meditation, exercise, jogging/running, Hatha yoga (or other kind, …meditation is part of it) helps but does not replace the total exclusion of masturbation. Your body needs to recover, and it can only recover by stopping masturbation.

What lefty wrote is true. Of course its hard to get a sexual partner when you have low self-confidence and i wouldn’t say that stopping to masturbate is a skill. In my opinion it’s more of an attitude, a question of choice and determination.

For all those people who think that non-masturbating is a religious thing should reconsider their beliefs. As i mentioned most of religions try to describe a universal truth. Your life, consciousness, intelligence originates from somewhere, which people refer to as God. You are not in a position to tell that there is no God or anything like that, simply because you don’t know the truth. But if you think with your heart (i don’t care how cheesy it may sound), you will experience something… you will start to LIVE. All of those people tried to tell you how to achieve the ultimate happiness which is in you and is independent from other things. You can reach it only by becoming clean.

The difference between masturbation and sex:
Well masturbation is a vice and that’s it. Its about your body and not your soul.
“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

And if you say that i am a religious zealot and that’s why I’m against masturbation… well then find a better argument. Please.

    P.S. Live consciously!

  34. alexxnom
    May 1, 2009 | 12:42 pm

    One more thing:

There are many who disagree, and say that scientists proved that masturbation prevents prostate cancer and its a perfectly normal and healthy habit:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3072021.stm

Okay, now people can say that its scientifically proven. Let’s see what does it mean:
    http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Scientifically+proven

“The principles and empirical processes of discovery and demonstration considered characteristic of or necessary for scientific investigation, generally involving the observation of phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis concerning the phenomena, experimentation to demonstrate the truth or falseness of the hypothesis, and a conclusion that validates or modifies the hypothesis.”

Oh yes, now if we analyze the terms in this definition we can agree that if someone has based his empirical discovery on his own life, then he did a scientific method. This means that if someone says that he “doesn’t feel good” (physically) after masturbation it can be considered as a conclusion which modifies a hypothesis which says that masturbation is healthy.

As a result scientists shouldn’t lie so much… Masturbation has negative psychological, mental, physical effects no matter how many times you do it, because simply put its a vice, an addiction. Period.

I’ve been masturbating since i was 12 years old. I am now 20 going on 21. I have experienced every symptom mentioned in your post. I would love to be free of this horrible addiction. I’ve tried swearing on my grandmother’s grave, Swearing to god, paying money to charity everything. i am still unable to kick this habit. It seems like I keep making excuses to watch pornography and masturbate. I am the smallest man in my family and i feel its because of my addiction. I met my gf a year ago and three months before i met her I lasted three moths without masturbation but after she broke up with me two months after meeting me and the depression from that made me feel like i needed to masturbate. When we firt stared having sex She was impressed with me everytime we had sex. We were having sex almost everyday for those two months and she was impressed every time. But when my habit picked up she and I noticed a decline in satisfaction because even though we had broke up we were still having sex a lot. We decided to get back together a year later and I haven’t been the same since we first started dating a ear before. I have been doing worse and worse since i started this habit. My health has declined. I get sick alomost all the time. I am always tired. The things that i used to love most are no concern of mine anymore. I cant be passionate about anything anymore. I have no sense of competition. My body is brittle and frail. My skin has acne scars from years ago because it takes me forever to heal. Masturbation has ruined my life and i wouldn’t wish this on my greatest enemy. I don’t want to lose my Girlfriend but she doesn’t deserve a passion lacking boyfriend who cant please her mentally or physically. Sorry about the rant it’s just that this is the best post about masturbation addiction I have ever seen and i just feel better talking about it. thank you

I think what siddhartha meant is: since you said that ‘When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect!’, then isn’t sex with a condom similar to masturbating (in terms of health benefits, or rather, the lack of it)?

First of all, Thank you thehealthblogger.com for this information… I started masturbating when I found a playboy magazine, I was 13. Since I am addicted to it. I jerk 3-4 sometimes 5 times during the day and night. Some of the common effects you mentioned are true. Always tired, loosing hair, sleep problems, lower back pain, concentration and memory problems and balls pain. I agree with the guy that set black circles thing, but I don’t agree about the erection, my stuff is always hard and I am not a quicky which makes my partners happy… Anyway, I suffer from other things and need your advise. I always have this low blood pressure, pale face, bad mood in the mornings, and don’t eat well… In 2004, I had to be at the hospital for 45 days, no masturbation, I gained weight, good memory, bloody and healthy face, no hair loose, I was in a good shape… I stopped masturbating for three days now, no lower back pain, no headaches, I sleep well and good concentration. That is my own experience.

You offered barely any scientific evidence to back up your claim. Your article is purely speculative. The brain cannot differentiate between masturbation and intercourse. Of course anything done in excess is never healthy. Looking at pornography is not healthy. But masturbating once or twice a week is not going to have any major detrimental effects on the body. Do you want to be walking around with blue balls all the time? Sometimes it’s necessary to release that sexual tension.

When you said “When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect! Bet you didn’t know that?!”

You’re essentially advocating unprotected sex, no? That can be much more unhealthy than masturbation. STD’s, unwanted pregnancy, etc.

this is interesting. There always seems to be a second side to everything. I have had some lower back problems (and I don’t do heavy lifting) that i think could very plausibly be (have been) an effect of my masturbating habits. I like this article. I have stopped for good. I have a friend who asked me why shouldn’t she do it if I did it, so I stopped. It is very addicting I’m not surprised that it’s kind of like heroin. I’ll definitely refer my friend to this article. Sexual looseness is not affordable. Sexuality is one of the biggest aspects of our lives and if we don’t control it, it will control us.

I got a couple of problems with your rantings about how masturbation is a terrible thing

1st, if masturbation can produce the same good feelings as a drug, without any of the chronic health effects, insane spend all your money and commit crimes to get more addiction, then what the **** is wrong with feeling good from it?

It’s proven that when you are happy and feeling good, your overall health skyrockets, currently I am a college basketball player and I have noticed that when I am in a shitty mood, depressed or have something on my mind, you play bad and your energy levels suffer. However when you are feeling good, not only does it give you a certain edge, but you make shots and your focus is much stronger

Not saying that I would masturbate before practice because it does take vitamins and minerals and proteins to produce sperm and a whole lot of energy to ejaculate, however there is nothing wrong with it. On top of that if you are eating right and exercising you should have enough energy and stamina to be able to masturbate everyday and be just fine.

Finally it’s been proven that those who masturbate often are less likely to develop prostate cancer when you grow older. I don’t have the sources but if you look it up, you’ll find it easy.

Basically, you have no reason to blast on masturbating, because although it can make you tired not able to concentrate and all that other stuff, if you are truly taking care of yourself you should have no problem

Thank you for this wonderful post. Masturbation is a very popular activity in teenagers, and there are many people who pass it off, saying, “it’s normal” or “it’s perfectly healthy.” I personally know that that is b******t. And I admit that I’ve been using that as an excuse to keep doing it. I know it will be long and hard (no pun intended), but from now on, I vow to be strong and not give in anymore.

Thanks again and wish me luck

Masturbation is indeed truly evil. I am 32 and have masturbated for 13 years (3 times a week), but literally stopped 2 years ago because of severe sleeping and prostate problems. But shortly after all those health problems started to showed, which I won’t go into gory details. Fortunately I found a good Chinese doctor and he helped me a lot in the recovering process (Chinese medicine has been wrestling with these problems for two thousand years). Unfortunately because of stress I’ve taken somewhat of a step backward. I can honestly say that there were moments where I wanted to end my life but my friends and girlfriend have been supportive (I couldn’t even tell my parents)!

Not to be religious or anything, but sexual misconduct, no matter in what religion, is a great sin, and brings real bad karma – just like the law of physics – for every action, there is a reaction, and debilitating health is a only small part of that reaction.

I am still in a slow and painful recovery process but I am somewhat better now than I was 2 years ago and there is still a long road ahead.

I advise everyone that has health problem to immediately stop masturbating and seek help from a qualified doctor of Chinese medicine. Then may be for those who are sincere about changing their life around to adopt some form of spiritual lifestyle. It’ll help you refrain from tempting thoughts and may be even neutralize some of those negative karma!

This has to be the biggest load I have ever read. Many scientists have done research into this and found that masturbation is a normal, healthy practice. I notice that there were no links or citations regarding any of the lies you posted. Interesting how in the comments you claim that wet dreams are natural, and therefore not harmful. This makes no sense; either ejaculating while not in a woman is bad for you, or it isn’t. You can’t have it both ways.

I hope anyone reading this blog does their research instead of blindly believing this naivety.

    Hi,

I have masturbated on and off since I was about 15 or 16 years old. I used to masturbate anywhere from once a week to three times a day. I now suffer from weak erections.I am now 32 years old and suffering from weak erections. I have resolved never to masturbate again because of the damage it has caused to me both physically, mentally, and spiritually. However, I am wondering if I will ever regain normal function? Will my erections ever be as hard as they used to be? I should note that I havent masturbated in about one week. Have you ever heard of someone who got weak erections because they masturbated but then regained good hard erections after they stopped masturbating? If so ow long after they stopped did normal erections return? This is making me very sad…sometimes I feel as though I have damaged my body beyond repair and when I start to think like that I often seek comfort (if only momentarily) in the act of masturbation. Please help, I am going crazy. Any resources you could direct me to would be much appreciated. So sorry for the long post but your the only guy who has a site outlining the neg. effects of masturbation. Infact my urologist has told me that I should masturbate more to recondition my penis. I know now that this is false and I have since stopped please, please help.

    Thank you

      Hi Robert,

      Please don’t despair!

      Check this site out:

      http://www.herballove.com/library/resource/overmas/

They specialise in masturbation problems and how to overcome any damage done.

I remember once a reader was overcome with masturbation and emailed me a long letter of his experience, it took him some time to recover properly, though he did recover.

He tried various things (I can’t seem to find his email though!) – though I do remember it was a combination of herbal treatment as well as some supplements and actually refraining from the act too.

      Be optimistic and positive!

      Hope that helps!

Thank you for the response…that puts my mind at ease. If you find that email, or know the specific supplements he used I would greatly appreciate it. Also do you recall how long it took him to fully recover (weeks, months, years)? How soon did he see a positive effect after starting treatment? Thank you so much for creating this blog and helping those who are suffering in silence. I truly do appreciate the help.

Hi Robert and the health blogger, I just saw you posted something about herballove. I would personally not buy any product that Dr. Lin sells. While masturbation is definitely very bad for you, there is no evidence that the mechanisms Dr. Lin “proposed” on his website are true. Furthermore, if you read his advices to people, they are along the line of “take my products and continue to masturbate (less, of course).” In fact, there is another website where people have found his products to be generally ineffective: http://recover.forumup.org/. You’ll also find people posting cases and discuss their issues on that website.

does anyone know a person who was addicted to masturbation, who, as a result of his addiction could only get very weak erections but, regained strong, hard erections after stopping masturbation altogether. How long did it take for him to regain his function??? Did he do anything other than abstain from masturbation? If so what did he do? Any advice would be much appreciated…Just wanted to say that this site has really acted to lift my spirits…its nice to know there are people out there who not only understand the negative consequences of masturbation but are willing to share information with those struggling with this very private vice. It is so funny how people will believe anything. There is NO scientific proof that masturbation is bad for you. but of course you people probably don’t know very much about how the world works around you, so i wont waste too much time here. all in all, show me hard proof, rather than your dim-witted opinionated analysis.

    December 29, 2009 | 9:10 am

John, it sounds like you have some repressed homosexual issues that you need to resolve. I’m not telling you that masturbation is healthy, but from the contents of your post, your issues with masturbation seem to involve homosexuality. Perhaps you need to consider the possibility that you are gay. Many homophobes are, to an extent. On a side note, fasting IS a great way to gain sexual mastery. Sexual energy is an incredibly potent force. When harnessed properly, it can energize the upper chakras, particularly the throat, the center for higher creative will. Used unwisely, it will leak out the lower chakras or cause energetic blockages which will later manifest as illness. It also causes one to be very materialistic, one’s higher faculties being only shallow remnants of what they should be. Masturbation is no more beneficial to a left hand path practitioner, as sex energy is just being leaked out and is not being harnessed to increase the power of the lower chakras. All in all, it is a practice leading to halted spiritual development, putting any being in a weak, gray area where they are of no use to anyone, including themselves.

I’m in the middle of kicking the habit at the moment. Given no degree of swearing or psychological manipulation has helped, I’ve been forced to deliberately damage the organ (but in a manner that won’t cause any real harm aside from some blood). Sandpaper ftw. Burns like Hell but I’d rather struggle with that and randiness than put up with all the pain the habit is causing me now.

I am also entirely certain it causes severe acne, if not just acne period, in many if not all people. Personal experience.

here is a practical and proven tip

To all chronic mastubators. Stay/ live in a place which has sub zero temperature ( preferable -3 and below) and your urge to mastubate will vanish within 3 days, due to your body going to nutrition conserving mode)

(this means dont use a heater in your house and room and keep warm only by wearing warm clothing)

Post 3 days continue to live in such a place for 2 months to get rid of the habbit

Nothing else on the planet will work to get you rid of the habbit

Get your life and health back

After reading some of the comments regarding the masterbation article, i have to say im rather blown away by, and question the legitamacy of a number of the responses e.g ‘masterbation ruined my life’. My OPINION (though this word seems to be used as a disclaimer for writing useless, misinformed articles) is based on scientific findings and is not a biased article which seems to be trying to grab shock interest from people who seem to be of a rather unhealthy mental disposition. Wanking too much does, of course have very negative and often serious and depressing effects on people, however, it is important that to maintain the integrity and ensure the text relates to the title of this article, you have to understand that there is a huge difference between masterbation and having an unhealthy sexual craving and it is not the case that the two are absolutely and causely linked. It is a fact that it is safer to masterbate than to have unprotected sex (speaking in a strict, clinical sense). I am also blown away by the contraditory arguments in this article, for example..masterbation causes acne and masterbation decreases testosterone. The primary cause of acne in 12-19 year olds is testosterone, therefore to say that a loss of testosterone increses acne would require some ground breaking scientific backup and not, as seems to be the case, the opinion of somebody with free time, a computer and zero credibility

“MASTURBATION IS IN THE BODY OF ITS BEHOLDER!”…… HOW IT AFFECTS SOMEONE DEPENDS ON THE THOSE WHO TEND TO INDULGE IN IT, THEY ARE THE ONES WHO LIVES ARE DESTROYED. SO ONLY A PERSON CAN DECIDE IF TI’S HEALTHY FOR THEMSELVES. SAYING MASTURBATION IS HEALTHY/NON-HEALTHY IS ENTIRELY UP TO WHO CHOOSE TO PRACTICE IT. AS FAR AS SAYING PROS/CONS YOU COULD ALSO SAY THE SAME ABOUT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS THEY ALMOST NEVER HAVE A 100% TREATMENT RATE, LOOK AT ALL THE RECALLS THATB HAVE BEEN MADE. SO EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION AND IT’S EITHER GOOD OR BAD NEVER 100% TRUE!

Okay these are all lies! Masturbation is actually good for you. Masturbation is good for things such as:
    * Relieving stress and releasing tension (including the obvious, sexual tension)
    * Providing a sexual outlet for people who are not having sex with a partner (whether by choice or by circumstance)
    * Alleviating pre-menstrual symptoms in some women
    * Helping to induce sleep, or conversely, helping to start the day with an energized calm
    * Strengthening muscle tone in the genital region
    * Promoting a couples’ level of sexual satisfaction in their relationship
    * Providing treatment for some types of sexual dysfunction

Don’t feel bad if you masturbate, it’s a perfectly normal thing… people of all kinds do it:
    * Infants — while not necessarily erotic, many infants touch their genitals once they learn that the stimulation feels good.
    * Children — again, not necessarily erotic, but many children also find self-stimulation pleasurable.
    * Adolescents — perhaps the classic group associated with masturbation. Many males and females masturbate regularly in their pre-teens and teens.
    * Adults — married, partnered, or single, adults ages 18-59 are actually more likely to masturbate than adolescents. What’s more, people with regular sexual partners are more likely to masturbate than singles.
    * And then there are many people, from all age groups, who rarely or never masturbate.

This is stupid. I’m 54 years old, married, have 2 kids (both of which attend MIT) and have a Doctorate in phyciatric studies. Also, I’m in the best of health, and frequently participate in triathalons and other competitions.

I’ve masturbated all of my life, and it has not affected me in any way whatsovever. I have never had any of the aformentioned symptoms.

Perhaps some of your points are true, however, the ratio between the benefits and health complications of masturbation are 20:1.

Unless you have any medical knowledge on the subject (professional education, not Google), shut your mouth, because you have NO idea what your talking about.

i think more than anything it’s the psychological effects that it has on you that causes problems. if you are an addict it must be intervening with your normal life you might not be able to complete the assignments and all, your girlfriend might not get orgasm as you are focusing on just your pleasure. if u want more info go to this site sexualcontrol.com download a free book from there it’s worth reading for all masturbation addicts.

I am a 21 year old and I have been masturbating since my early teenage years. Throughout this time I have become dependant on masturbating. I have never had sex and I do not believe in having sex until marriage therefore I find my release through masturbating. I have not been aware how dangerous masturbation is and recently I have had occasional pain in my right testicle. I found a lump there a few years ago and it was checked but it is only a cyst, I am prone to cysts. I have read about when sperm ducts become blocked and infected and this can cause occasional pain and discomfort along with occosional swelling. I think it is either discomfort or pain from the cyst or sperm ducts getting blocked. Do you know if the sperm duct will become uninfected after a period of time?

I have occasionally had fatigue from masturbation and find it difficult to concentrate when I find an opportunity to masturbate. Sleep problems also occur when I stay up late to masturbate and as mentioned I have suffered from testicle pain and discomfort.

I know it sounds as if I have a masturbation problem but I do not want to see specialists or a doctor concerning it. I do want to cure the problem so are there any hints you could be kind enough to give me to get my sexual release in other ways rather than masturbation? Will my testicle discomfort and pain go away if I stop masturbating? Are there any foods, drinks, activities I can eat, drink or do to help or any of these I need to cut out? Is it okay to masturbate occasionally or better to cut it out all together? Thank you for your time.

I’m surprised no one has said anything about being holy to the Lord. Without holiness, no one will see God (Hebrews 12:14). Do we not think about this anymore? We know that the body is not for fornication (1 Corinthians 6:13). And we are to “flee fornication” (1 Corinthians 6:18). The fornicators and homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9). He, who rejects this, rejects God (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8).

This is pretty serious stuff. It comes from the same book that tells us God loves us and all the things that make life worth living, like love, joy, peace, happiness, justice, mercy, kindness, faith, and hope. I worry because I got married hoping to not be troubled by this. Now my wife can’t have sex and I’m tempted to masturbate. I have fasted and prayed etc. I know some of you will do the Dawkins thing and say something like “God probably doesn’t exist so you can relax and enjoy life”. But this doesn’t work. Without God there is actually more anxiety because our lives are totally meaningless and worthless. It’s ridiculous to be an existentialist and try to create your own meaning because in the end you know you are only fooling yourself.

Really? There are this many comments on this article that all agree with you, and NO opposing views? I suspect foul play here. Really this article just looks to me like an uneducated religious rant. You couldn’t even fully define masturbation because of how grossed out you are. You didn’t even take the time to spellcheck (“YOU’RE having sex with yourself”…not “your”. Elementary school mistake there) The whole thing is poorly written. It looks like a paper some high school freshman wrote for their English class, proud of their “unique” ideals more than being interested in helping anyone.

This entire article seems full of, like you stated, something you read somewhere. And really? My penis absorbs minerals from women’s vaginas? Why am I even taking vitamin pills? But seriously, that’s ridiculous.

Mainly I’m writing this comment because I don’t believe this article has been up here for 2 years with no opposing comments. Will it survive the author’s closed-mindedness?

You’re right, I have had just as many negative comments as I have had positive ones, however, nearly 99% of the negative comments have used extremely foul language and they are most definitely not appropriate to publish on the site – you may have realised this had you read the other comments.

If someone wants to make a criticism (whether constructive or not), I don’t mind accepting and publishing the comment, so long as the comment does not include swearing and general immaturity.

I agree that masturbation is a drain on the body and the mind. I know this from personal experience.

The misconception of most people I think comes was a result of a backlash towards centuries of religious and social taboos about masturbation. People used to say masturbation was wrong because it was a “sin” or “shameful”, so now a lot of people say the complete opposite. They say it’s normal, healthy, and nothing to be ashamed of.

The truths lies in discarding all these preconceptions. Personally, I’ve found that the more I used to masturbate, the more irritable I would be in the days that followed, and the less energy I would have when I would exercise. While it’s true, masturbating the day before some strenuous exercise gave me a quick boost, if I masturbated too often I’d really feel lethargic. I’d also tend to get sick (cold and fever) more often in the cold months.

I’ve gone 12 days without masturbating, which is the longest ever since before I ever got distracted by this stuff near the beginning of puberty. Really, it’s just simpler to go through life without a bad habit that serves no purpose and takes up time I could be using to do other things or simply relax.

I have now read this article from top to bottom….. and I have to say that there are very few articles that states that masturbation is bad for you. I can tell you all this much. I have been masturbating for about 11 years now and physically I’m still doing great. I have a small grey patch on my head, my back hurts from time to time and memory loss is a natural occurrence. The moment I start wondering what my name is or where I stay…. I will know that I stopped too late.

Everywhere I turned…. Sexual fantasies floats around….. worst thing is that your mind encourage your body and then other times your body start and your mind just follows…. And before you see it… your masturbating….

Masturbating is a drug….. Definitely!!!! Is stopping easy…. NO!!!! not so easy….

Masturbating was killing my Soul / Spirit. During masturbating I’m in a different place for those few moments, for afterwards…. It was like chunks of my Soul / Spirit was being ripped out. I know that this is not right, if Masturbating was a good thing, my Soul / Spirit should not be getting hurt.

I have been praying a lot lately. I have been clean for 15 days, but I’m planning to stay clean and far away from Masturbating. Each day is a challenge, some days are easy…. Like today was not a very easy day, ones thoughts fills one’s mind and the funny thing is…. That’s how I come to find this article. I’m very glad that I did.

During this 15 days, I can definitely say that my Soul / Spirit is doing better, I can now easier talk to woman and keep concentration on a toping “when in conversation”, I feel more confident and a lot happier, I sleep better and have extra energy and my back…. Well that is still sore… but I blame the chairs I sit on…..

It’s not easy…. and no matter what the professionals tell you, I am a 100% sure that it is not good for once Soul / Spirit.

please for the love of all that is right with the world ignore this person’s post. masturbation is normal and healthy. over-masturbation is a different matter entirely.

it is people like this that are screwing with the modern era. they admit that there is NO scientific backing to their statements and yet still maintain that they, not the scientists that study these matters in depth, are correct.

masturbation is good, just don’t over indulge, same as anything else really.

Before you read any of this, I want to stress the effect of OVER masturbation/ejaculation is dependent on the person, some people are really negatively affected by it (eg. me). Whereas my friends, who does it hundred times more often, do not.

For those who wants to know why OVER masturbation (or even EXCESSIVE sexual intercourse) is bad and is causing all the problems you are experiencing (and will eventually experience), I suggest you take a look at the following textbook on Google Books:

    http://books.google.ca/books?id=M4vch8pNGCMC&pg=PR5&dq=giovanni+maciocia+acupuncture&hl=en&ei=xj2_S7CSAYL6lwfphJmKBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CGAQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=giovanni%20maciocia%20acupuncture&f=false

Specifically look up kidneys and essence. You can also see it at Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/Foundations-Chinese-Medicine-Comprehensive-Acupuncturists/dp/0443074895/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270827225&sr=1-1

It is a Chinese medicine textbook for accupuncturists and herbalists written by Giovanni Maciocia. It is obviously dense and the eastern concepts need some getting used to.

In Chinese medicine, the physical body and the mind is connected – when you ejaculate TOO MUCH, you are depleting essence (your life force), which literally weakens your entire body, and will ultimately have devastating consequences (which I don’t need to reiterate).

In addition, essence provides clarity to the mind (thus affecting memory and concentration), and that is why religious people promotes celibacy.

Once you understand this, you can see that over ejaculation PARTLY explains why many males are experiencing ED, because ejaculation weakens the kidneys, which is the organ that powers your penis in the first place. It is a vicious cycle. With this in mind, you will understand that ED drugs ultimately make the problem even worse.

Martial artists, especially those practicing internal martial arts (e.g. Tai-chi, and Shaolin), have developed ancient practices to transform sexual energy to increase overall health and vitality. Certain Buddhist monks even developed internal practices to prevent wet dreams.

A famous text for transforming sexual energy is the Marrow Washing Classic written by Da Mo, a famous Indian Buddhist monk, over a thousand years ago:

    http://www.amazon.com/Qigong-Secret-Youth-Changing-Classics/dp/1886969841

BTW, Da Mo is also the monk who developed the martial arts practiced by Shaolin Monks.

For me, I found out this rather late, I have been abstinent for 2 years now and am still recovering from the effects of over masturbation.

Perhaps instead of personal opinion and conjecture one should educate oneself and read articles that contains studies and scientific fact: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/is_masturbation_healthy

Simply put masturbation is a natural and healthy part of life, and there are a myriad of factual articles that state such. And kindly before I hear the religious arguments, realize that some of the same religions that condemn masturbation OK childhood marriage, multiple wives and stoning people for adultery.

I haven’t used any foul language nor immature themes so hopefully my post wont fall afoul of the rather ‘interesting’ editorial slant of this site.

the health blogger, studies show 95% of men masturbate and 89% of women masturbate, there are completely healthy people that mastrbate regularly and have none of your so called “symptoms”, studies also show that it is indeed healthy to moderately masturbate. It becomes unhealthy if it causes problems with a partner, or if it is done in public, or when it causes a person to feel bad about themselves, and I doubt 95% and 89% of all men and women feel guilty about it or the numbers would most likely be lower than that. As for myself, I masturbate moderatley and for anyone who would like to know, I am quite fine.

John, I agree with you on everything but one thing: your stance on homosexuality. Personally, I am opposed to homosexual acts/marriage for religious reasons (also pre-marital sex) but I am gay myself. Do you think homosexuality is a choice and that it is changeable? Because believe me, there is plenty of SCIENTIFIC evidence to the contrary.

man, seriously????? all your doing is causing trouble. your making masturbation seem like its the worse thing that anyone can do and your replys to people arent helping, this whole article is un true. Masturbation is normal. monkeys even do it. it doesnt make you depressed or sad unless you dwell on the topic of it and worry and then go read articles like this on it. i masturbate whenever i feel like it, watch porn whenever i feel like it, and still have amazing sex with my girlfriend. im 17 years old, and this is all not relevant. let me explain:

    - Fatigue – yeah, for like 15 minutes after. then you feel refreshed, your mind clear of sexual tensions that blocked you from enjoying the rest of the world.

    - Lower back pain – I dont know where you heard this, maybe your masturbating in a wierd position or something man.

    - Thinning hair/hair loss – its just low DHT caused by RISE in testosterone, which can easily be cured by counteracting with certain foods. The leading cause of hair loss is stress. and masturbating every once and awhile reduces stress.

    - Weak erection – Not true, masturbation can strenghthen the muscles the penis uses to get hard, thus creating a stronger erection. The only cause of a weak erection would be you forget how to get stimulated through just feelings, and rely on porn to get hard. just saying that will cause anxiety and lead to weak erections. if you believe it will happen, it will happen.

    - Premature ejaculation – yeah, if all you do when you masturbate is jerk as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds, blow it off, and go to sleep. masturbation can be used to treat pre. eja. by helping you identify the stages you are at while masturbating, and applying this knowledge when you are with a female to adjust your tempo or when to take a break. Anxiety will also cause P.E., which you probably caused a sum of people to have.

    - Groin/testicular pain – this is true, if you try to blow a load 4 times in a row. this pain can actually come from NOT masturbating. blue balls dude. thats god telling you that you need to shoot your splooge.

    - Concentration and memory problems – Once again, not accurate information. These problems come from the anxiety and depression that the masterbatie feels because they think they are doing something wrong (even though it is natural and HEALTHY). The anxiety will make you lose memory, and will cause you to not be able to concentrate, bc all you will be thinking about is how bad it is, bc youre preaching all this nonsense. If you believe it will happen or that its true, then it will become true, and it will happen.

    - Sleep problems – …i sleep just fine, better even, after a sweet sesh. and when i dont, like 3 times a week, i still sleep perfectly fine.

people, ive been slapping my monkey since i was able too, ive been looking at porn since i figured out how too. im extremely healthy, in great shape, have plenty of friends, am not ever depressed, and have a healthy sexual relationship with my girlfriend. If you believe all this, then yes, your going to experience the “side effects” bc your going to anticipate them and they will come. Just move on and say, hey man, i dont believe this stuff.
    this is all

revised it a bit to make it acceptable. you should still leave my original(it has more power)
    changed my name too.

    May 15, 2010 | 7:54 am

I agree with you totally, dude. I had been masturbating since 16.I often felt okay then but in the long run,it made me weak and I am having all the symptoms you described. Sure, when you are young,it feels okay, you protest strongly that there’s scientific proof it’s ‘healthy’ but wait until you get older, then you will feel the effects. You may not feel it,but others will notice on your face that you are fatigued, you look older than your age and many other things. Of course, other than refraining from constant masturbation, you must have a healthy lifestyle. I didn’t realize how much it had affected my health until a colleague commented on my pale looking face and I went to see a Chinese medicine practitioner. He said I had the health of a sickly 70 year old! I got away from all technology(source of porn)for 2 weeks which stopped my habits. When I returned to civilization,I noticed the circles around my eyes had gone and I felt more energetic. So,for those who may feel nothing wrong, try asking friends how you look to them. Oh,and don’t bother replying to my comment. I’m just passing through…

    Hi,

Thank you very much The Health Blogger.

These ‘personalities’ who detract from your article and the many positive or supportive comments, always mention the same thing:

    SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES.

An all-capital designation for a word means it could
mean anything, and usually it is a study of opposites. This is the reason why corporations are named MCDONALDS – they are not owned by scotsmen, first off. This is the reason why the UNITED STATES, a Delaware municipal corporation, refers to you as MR. HEALTH BLOGGER in your mail. It’s not actually your mail, but the agents and officers of the USA et al, hope you pick it up and act on it. They need your energy; they have none of their own.

    ** Really. **

Where SCIENCE, MEDICINE, or ‘LAW’ are concerned, these are fictions today and at least going back 100 years. Besides that provable fact, it is a provable, unavoidable fact that very little if any MEDICINE, is scientific. The AMA (AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION) is neither american, nor medical. It may not even qualify as an association. It is merely a group of thugs designed to squeeze out all the other 149 kinds of healing medicine; so anything reported by a PSYCHIATRIST, a dubious profession, is to be considered as if from the lips of lucifer.

To understand how there are so many people who serve the snake today, it is necessary to know that the founding of the FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM was at the same time as the AMA. Like the AMA, the FED is neither federal, nor does it have reserves. It is not a system in the sense of an orderly, natural approach to life; it is instead designed to tear the foundation out of civilization.

The main proponent of masturbation is natural, along with sex with children:

A careful study of KINSEY RESEARCH reveals that it was and is, a fraud.

Alfred was a sick and demented man, who could hold down his job enough when supported by agents working for the same conspiracy as those who owned/operated the FED.

When his work was loosing it’s luster, the same people on the same conspiracy, the officers and agents of HOLLYWOOD, created a film with Liam Nielson as ALFRED KINSEY.

So, bravo to not feeding the trolls! I have roundly trounced them thusly.

To those who have a problem with masturbation, and the ill effects: Believe in what you can see without any third-party interference. We must disregard the phoney maps we have been given of the territory, and instead make our own maps.

Masturbation is a disease. One is at a state of dis-ease, not one with nature – by doing it.

Brothers! We are called not to do such a thing to our perfect bodies given to us by the most high!

Let the light shine! And burn the eyes of those who would read this blog and thus block them from commenting their vitriol and filth.

Kudos to the man behind ‘the health blogger’: Your article is fantastic. Now please delete all those who disagree; I never read most of their comments; they are repetitive and show at minimum, blind faith in a broken way, and many demonstrate they are with the forces of death, the conspiracy of evil, which we men must separately, then together, rise up to say

    No!

Hey Health Blogger, I was reading into this site a while back and I was reading a question which you didn’t actually, but instead just insulted the guy’s intelligence (a little unprofessional if you ask me). I believe it was Siddartha’s question: “what is the difference between masturbation and doing sexual intercourse using a condom ?” That question actually rose in my head reading your initial article, because you said something like,

“Did you know that every time you ejaculate, you lose approximately 3-5mg of zinc, that’s nearly a third of your RDA… When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female ‘vaginal secretions’ which balance this effect! Bet you didn’t know that?!”

3 others had the same question I did as well, trying to justify Siddartha’s statement, but I don’t think you replied… With the amount of safe sex being practised in North America today, it’s only logical to think that by wearing a condom, not only is a man preventing his sperm from entering a woman’s vagina, but in turn preventing a woman’s ‘vaginal secretions’ from being absorbed as well. So i’ll ask again, what is the difference between safe sex, where no vaginal secretions are received, and masturbation?

I looked back at my comment and in all honesty I am surprised I wrote something like that. I don’t remember writing something like this and you are right, it is totally unprofessional. I have removed the comment that I made and apologise to Siddartha. I’m still shocked I wrote that.
In reply to your question, there is no difference between the two acts other than one being with the opposite sex and the other with oneself.
Thank you for bringing me to account.

Thanks for the information. E’s information on mind/body was esspecially informative to me. I’ve been masturbating since 12 or 13. I tried to fight it but was torn to pieces. I’ve reformed the other things in my life and now ready to tackle this beast again. Round 2… FIGHT!

  116. anonymous
    June 4, 2010 | 1:02 pm

I’ve been masturbating since 9 or 10 and often ejaculate more than once a day. I do suffer chronic fatigue at times, or loss of mental concentration, and lots of sleep problems, and sometimes zinc problems (evident in my fingernail beds). However, some of this is not because of masturbation. I think this article is only 40-50% correct at most. As you will see later, some of it is actually psychological.

Masturbation is both healthy and unhealthy, just like most things that are blown out of proportion. Studies show that consistent ejaculation prevents prostate cancer. Makes sense to me — keep the plumping clear.

I can say, however, that my wife and I have been married for a year-and-a-half, and I’m still a virgin (technically speaking, since I haven’t had actual intercourse). She is undergoing therapy, but she has a problem with a tight, muscle-bound vagina. She can’t have sex until the problem is remedied (I can’t remember the name of the complication, it was caused by a non-sexual childhood injury). Therefore, I have no choice but to masturbate as I always have. Other married men can have this problem too (especially if their wife experiences traumatic surgery or rape). So pick your poison but don’t gulp down too much.

Be realistic… stay away from pornography, and don’t be idle.

  117. Masturbation is srs bsns
    June 5, 2010 | 3:57 pm

I call bs, though I can’t figure out why anyone would take this to be truthful. I have better concentration, an overall better attitude, and I often become very sleepy right after masturbating. I do not have any health problems whatsoever, and I am not addicted to it.

Also, I am a female and I have a boyfriend who also masturbates, and he lasts for hours… ;) Pretty sure he has no health problems as a result, either.

I agree that sex feels better, but when you’re in a temporarily long-distance monogamous relationship, what else is there? People get horny! No use in denying yourself some relief and thinking it’s some dirty, sinful, unhealthy act. It’s natural.

  118. This Is How You Stop
    June 8, 2010 | 5:09 pm

    Great job the health blogger.
Sites like this are rare. Mainly because medicine, science and other influential institutions like politics, churches, music industry, Hollywood, media, internet… are all corrupted… and sadly only few people know that on the top of the pyramid is Satan.

    This is my story:

I’m 18, and I’ve been a victim of masturbation when I was 16, although I didn’t completely stopped. When I remember that time I don’t want to. I was filling sick, I was looking sick, I hated myself, I lost weight and muscles, my grades in school fell, I hated everyone and everything… it was in short a Dark Age of my life. The worst, I didn’t realize what was the cause of my problems. They say puberty, well, no man should feel that way. I mean, it’s not humane. Until one day I heard from one student that masturbation is a sin. I did not mind if it’s a sin. Little later I heard that God put limits only to make our lives better. Than I started to limit frequency of masturbation. My life turned around. Now I am able to refrain from masturbation for more than a month, and due to all new knowledge I found about masturbation I’m definitely going to stop.

And finally this is how you get rid of bad habit (I learned it on All Power Seminar which site I advertised earlier).

1.There are two powers that control your life: a)Desire to joy.
    b) Desire to avoid pain.
The reason why bad habits are created is because we associate pleasure with them instead of pain.

2.There is something in brain called neuropathways. Every time you do something neuropathway in the brain is created. Each time you repeat the same thing the path/connection becomes becomes stronger. Thus the habit is created. Some studies show that all habits are actually mechanic. For example, when person who smokes sit on the same place for a long period of time his/her brain is telling him/her to start smoking because a neuropahway has been created between being bored and taking a cigarette
so person automatically takes it. For example I noticed that sometimes, when I don’t masturbate for a long period of time I do the same thing I would do to my penis to my finger. It’s because the neuropathway has been created between sexual arousal and masturbation act.

So to stop masturbation there are two things you have to do:

    1. You have to convince yourself that masturbation is causing pain to you rather than joy. You think it’s just the opposite. Think about it again, for few seconds of joy you’re gonna make your life miserable. Whenever you think about masturbation remember all the negative effects. Imagine all the pain this action is going to cause. Then, remember all the benefits of not masturbating.
    Imaging wonderful life without masturbation.

    2. Every time you feel need to masturbate you interrupt the pattern. You say “NO”. “It’s not worth it.” Say: “I’m better than that. I’m the winner. I’m in control.” Or just say “I AM” You can say it loud and clear. The more times you interrupt the pattern neuropathway becomes weaker, until it completely disappears.

Of course there are some other thinks you should do:
    Don’t watch porn
Avoid touching your penis too much
If you are seriously addicted avoid spending too much time naked and thinking about sex

    DON’T FIGHT MASTURBATION, DECLARE VICTORY!

You can also ask God for help. If you pray frankly you’ll have supernatural power. God is your friend and he is, more than anything, willing to help you. You just have to allow him.

First off, how does masturbation cause problems such as hair loss, a weak erection, premature ejaculation, memory loss, and testicular/groin pain (please provide some evidence for this). Secondly, you state that a loss of 3mg of zinc (compared to the 11mg needed per dy in males) is a major problem in masturbation. Well, 3mg of zinc is very little. In fact, you can gain 12mg of zinc from eating 0.47 cups of whole wheat. Please take this into consideration. To all other people out there, masturbation is perfectly healthy. I myself have masturbated everyday for about a year and experience no harmful effects from it. Just because something is good doesn’t mean you are addicted to it. Also, do not just believe one source. Do some research on your own. Thank you.

This is by far the most unsound bit of “advice” based on a few bits of unsound “opinion”. That is my “opinion”, That does not make me right or wrong. I find opinions are like chemichals, they can be used as drugs and as poisons, but most are just toxic. This is truly and epically TOXIC. I wish most people would waste there “opinions” in there home inbetween their 4 walls. Some people have a hard enough time coming to grips with masturbation(do not pardon the pun). This just makes it all the more difficult. Any one thing that could be addictive should be handled with care. I masturbate. I hope I dont go blind. I’m sure I won’t.
