Masturbation: It is NOT healthy for you, contrary to popular belief!

Please note, this article is based primarily upon my opinion and also various real life findings (e.g. emails from concerned readers, various forums and sites). Therefore I don’t have any “scientific” research to back these claims, however, the symptoms that occur to many are consistently recurrent. Remember, we don’t only have physical health to look after, we also have spiritual health which we need to tend to just as much! Most things in life have a benefit as well as some disadvantages. In some cases, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and in other cases the opposite is true; this is my opinion on this topic.

Yes, that’s right, I have chosen to write about a topic which is commonly perceived as taboo, though I know many will be intrigued and curious to read the information presented and learn the negative consequence of such an abhorrent practice.

So why am I writing this article?Well, mainly due to the fact that many uninformed individuals (no names) like to elucidate their opinions freely and willingly on this subject with very little to no knowledge whatsoever!

I have come across countless articles and opinions stating how masturbation is “…a healthy practice…”, the more I saw these false comments, the more I felt the need to correct this misconception!

If you don’t know what masturbation is, well then I’m very surprised.

Simply put, your having sex with yourself or more explicitly, with your hand!

Want a more concise explanation, pick up an encyclopedia or do a google search.

This is inherently against the natural disposition of man, don’t worry I’m not going to give a sermon!

I have read in the past how masturbation can be more addictive than heroin, now that is serous!

You can get your fix whenever and just about wherever!

You release the same chemical which makes you feel good when you take heroin (i.e. opioids), though in a lesser amount. (see this article: Internet Porn: Worse Than Crack?)

So what are the common effects of masturbation you ask?

Here’s a small list (though not an exhaustive one):

  • Fatigue
  • Lower back pain
  • Thinning hair/hair loss
  • Weak erection
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Groin/testicular pain
  • Concentration and memory problems
  • Sleep problems

This doesn’t mean that one shall experience all of these effects, though they are very common.

Did you know that every time you ejaculate, you lose approximately 3-5mg of zinc, that’s nearly a third of your RDA.

Zinc is one of the main minerals responsible for testosterone production, therefore less zinc, less testosterone etc.

I know some clever person out there is surmising that the same effects should occur when one has sexual intercourse, right?

Sorry to disappoint!

Apparently, when a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect!

Do you really want to be a one-minute man and look like an idiot when you are with your partner?

I thought not.

I advise those who masturbate regularly, to stop!

Eat some Oysters (very high in Zinc) and plenty of fruit and vegetables.Fast, for fasting diminishes one’s sexual desires, unless of course you can get married or something and keep busy, “For idle hands make work for…”!

Please don’t believe the fallacy that these so-called experts proclaim!Masturbation is not healthy and is quite detrimental to put it mildly!

hahahahaha… This really made my day. I would like to note I have masturbated 8 billion times and have no plans to stop in the future. I have none of the symptoms listed. If any of this was true there would be no high school sport teams. Hell, I’ve seen my dogs do this a few times, I hear all animals do. Don’t think they can’t just because they don’t have hands.

        June 16, 2011 | 4:59 pm

Sorry to be blunt, but. The sports teams are getting all the pussy while you’re getting all of your right hand, bro.

I know from experience as the former. In my basketball years in highschool, I masturbated maybe once a month at most, and my game was at it’s peak the whole time until after a session with my hand. Yeah.

Make no mistake about it, friend. Masturbation is weak and self-degrading.

Yeah but we aren’t animals. And I bet if you didn’t masturbate you would have more energy and your concentration and memory would be better. I know from personal experience.

Humans are animals really. We’re just more apt to do dumb things.

I honestly wish to know what makes your opinion more valid? I mean if dozens of experts(doctors, medical researchers, people who masturbate regularly :P )say different why do you think your analysis is more valid? That coupled with the fact that people have been diddling since the dawn of time makes your article pretty laughable. I will say some of your points are based in fact, but do not have much baring on the average person. In fact some of the “side effects” are quite the opposite for some people (for instance like three guys I have known can take forever to orgasm because of their having masturbated regularly)

Any “credibility” you may have is also hindered by the structure and word choice of your arguement. It makes you sound like a anti-masturbation zealot. Not to mention it is sexist in that it ignores the fact that most women masturbate.

The only real harm is when it is an addiction. Yet anything can become an addiction so masturbation is no different from anything else really. Some people become addicted to eating and eat whenever they get depressed/bored. Some people can’t stop themselves from watching porn. Some people can’t stop smoking. Some people can’t stop biting their nails. Some people have sucked their thumbs sense childhood and are well into their senior years.

Really people think and talk to actual experts. The moment the words “spirtual health” come up you know an article is bogus as my great nana’s wooden leg

Actually, humans are animals. Idk about you, but masturbation isnt very tiring even when you do it for an hour straight. Article claims “sleep problems,” its scientific fact that the release from a man triggers hormones that cause sleepiness (http://scienceline.org/2006/09/ask-wenner-sex/). I masturbate frequently and have a fantastic memory.

        July 10, 2011 | 5:51 am

This article is actually true. If I masturbate or have sex with my wife (note, I use a condom, so I don’t get those secretions to balance what I lose), I get very tired for the whole next day and if I’m sick I have trouble getting better. The loss of zinc is very serious and effects me enormously. I try to take a zinc supplement when I have sex, but I have trouble stomaching it. These bad side effects of sex might not be a problem for everyone, especially those who normally get an overabundance of zinc in their diet.

I almost cried when reading this people should be ashamed of themselves when people post questions on forums about masturbation problems people tend to brush it off as though its not true. “its healthy its healthy” no its not its for little punks. Everything is healthy in america homosexuality, expirinenting with drugs, making out with the same sex. Etc its no sense really only real men will benefit from this. And to those suffering from masturbation addiction then stay strong after friday it will be a week without masturbation for me. Im kicking this homo habit for good!!!

    • Steve
      May 18, 2011 | 3:56 pm

Homo habit? Obviously you are putting YOUR religious DOGMA into the situation. Homosexuality and making out with the same sex is wrong? Is there any suffering created when this happens?.. No.. as both men or both women are in total agreement with it. Further more, they are in total enjoyment with it. So what is bad about that?

Masturbation also does not create suffering, unless there is attachment, or you allow it to make you suffer. And in those cases, it is your control issues and attachment issues that create the suffering. And if you allow yourself to feel bad from masturbating, just because, when in fact it isn’t actually making you suffer, then it is YOU.. not the masturbation. It would be a misunderstanding.

Animals masturbate. Animals also has sex with the same sex. Tell me what is wrong with any of this?

    • Taylor
      June 21, 2011 | 1:45 am

Homosexuality and making out with the same sex is the same thing. No one said it was healthy to be a homosexual and its definitely not healthy to experiment with drugs. I masturbate every day and i’m a girl(straight btw). I’ve had no ill effects, not saying that there isn’t any but the benefits outweight the disadvantages. Girls do it to help with stress, relieve menstrual pains, or even to tighten the muscles to make sex better. Your seriously an idiot.

Hello anonymous. Masturbation does not create suffering, unless there is attachment, or you allow it to make you suffer. And in those cases, it is your control issues and attachment issues that create the suffering. And if you allow yourself to feel bad from masturbating, just because, when in fact it isn’t actually making you suffer, then it is you, not the masturbation, that is creating the suffering. It would be a misunderstanding. Ask yourself why you think it is bad. Why do you feel bad for doing it? Is it because someone told you it is wrong or that it is a ‘sin?’

Take yourself out of the influences from your parents, from religions, from politics, and from all the cultural influences that you have had put on you and brain wash you since you were a child. If one is raised to believe that they must rub ashes on their body daily in order to reach a good afterlife, then unless they hear otherwise, they will believe that. They have no other reference point(s). They have nothing else to turn to. They have nothing else they know as truth. But do they KNOW that rubing ashes will bring them to a good afterlife? No, not if they are doing it JUST because they are told so.

YOU must decide what is right and what is wrong in your life. How I would decide this, is I would ask if (whatever the ‘issue’ is) creates suffering within yourself or others. If it does, then you could dub it ‘wrong’.

However, you must also realize that just because someone suffers from something, doesn’t mean that it is wrong, because it is ultimately up to them to suffering from things. For example: There is nothing inherently right or wrong with saying “F**K!” in public, unless your intention of saying “F**K!” is to harm people. Then it could be said to be “wrong”. Otherwise, it is up to the people around you to be offended by you saying “F**K.” Because there is NOTHING within you saying that, that is good or bad. It is just a matter of perception. Of THEIR perception; How they view the word. How they want to take the word. So the WORD “F**K” is not causing them to suffer, it is THEM who is allowing themselves to suffer from hearing the word “F**K!” Again. It also matters about the INTENT behind why you said the word. If it was just to express anger, or if it was to make someone mad, or to say “F**K YOU!”. You could consider this ‘bad.’ However it is still ultimately up to the individual to suffer, after hearing this word.

Also. Not to say that this article is false, but like the author said, they have no evidence of this. So before you start to panic, make sure that what you are panicking about is true, in the first place. Do not believe everything you hear. Including EVERYTHING that I have said. Only believe it if it makes sense with your logic and reasoning. Only if it makes sense with what YOU have experienced and what YOU know to be true.

Please email me at grandstar5@gmail.com if you have ANY questions at all, brother.

    Dear Anonymous,

I have replied here so others may benefit from your questions and the consequent answers.

Please do not take these answers as the cure! They are simply some guidelines and advice, always refer to your physician/doctor.

Don’t worry I have changed your name to “Anonymous”. Answers to your questions:

Question 1. ” if i leave a subject for two weeks i might forget little details is this a memory problem?”

Not from what I can tell. This seems very normal, most people forget after a few days, so don’t worry!

Question 2. “if i stopped masturbating will my brain be cured as i have never masturbated”

I don’t see why not. The body has the ability to repair itself very quickly (especially when you are young and healthy)

Question 3. “and how much time the brain needs in order to be cured.”

Shouldn’t take long at all. Almost instantaneous hopefully.

Question 4. “what are the thing wich i need to eat or take to strengthen my memory”

This is somewhat of a subjective question, google that question and you should get a lot of information. Though things such as fruits, salads and some supplements (e.g. Ginko Biloba) would benefit.

You have nothing to worry about, just stop this bad habit and start living a healthier life.

You should most definitely be fine, don’t worry :)

So I was reading these so called statements about how unhealthy mastrobating is bad for the heath and I was wondering if the jackass really knew what he was talking about or is it kinda a religion thing. So I asked my doctor.

The truth is it’s like anything in the world. At moderate usuage it’s very healthy it keeps the prostate healthy and your testrone levels even.

Not only that if you not having sex and and you not using your penis you will loose your abilty to use your penis. That is a fact proven by the A.D.A.

Loss of memory it’s not from the Jacking off. It’s from the lack of blood flow to your brain. And comes back right away after. If you haven serous memory problems get it checked out by a real doctor that knows what to look for.

As in zinc loss. If you don’t use your sperm either way you pee it out. So you loose it either way.

Sorry for the correction and I’m not saying your thoughts on healthier life isn’t right for you but you shouldn’t push it on people if you don’t know what you are saying.

Thats true. Because heroin realeases neurotransmiters such as dopamine, which is also released during masterbation. But heroin or meth release 10 time more dopamine (hormone).

Don’t feel guilty. My advise is to try to stop masturbating in small steps. Try it to do every second day for a month and then any third day and so on… This may help. You probably won’t get over it alltogether, the truth is I do not know anybody who does, but it gives you at least the feeling of more control

I stand as proof that you can beat this detrimental habit.

I used homeopathy – this is not a joke – after treatment the desire to masturbate disappeared and after 2 years I have never gone back to it. Not even once.
I am a different man to the one I was back then, healthier and stronger than ever before.

So to all those wanting to beat it don’t try and do it alone. It’s only western medicine that doesn’t recognise it as a disease. Homeopathy does and I think Ayurveda may too. What worked for me was the advice of a good homeopath and a proper treatment for my illness.

It’s not your fault, you can beat this – I did, so can you!

Are you kidding me? Masturbation is a destruction of life?

In all theory to that, having sex is a destruction of life. Only a single sperm cell will fertilize an egg, resulting in a “loss of life” by all the sperm that do not fertilize an egg. Also, you do not have a 100% chance of conception with intercourse, so every time there is no conception, there is a loss of potential life.

The malarkey about it being a sin, it’s not in the original translation of any biblical text for the Christian faith, which I’m assuming you believe based on the sin doctrine. It been edited into the bible throughout generations by people who feel it necessary to control things of the people.

Very good that this information is out. Thank you The Health Blogger. You speak the truth.

From my experience I can say, I am a passionate masturbator (lol, someone should name a song like this), but it is not funny at all. For these few seconds of bliss, I miss out on good erection, healthy body, healthy life,… pleasing my better half longer and more in the moment, my hair is thinner, falling, my skin gets dry, selfconfidence IS LOWER, discipline over oneself dimminishes after time, vital energy LOW…
Well I could go on about a few things more, but I think this is more then enough.
It is a serious problem, but like any other chalenge it can be disciplined. You have the power to do so,…
    few tips for beginners…
..don’t touch yourself on the genitals, stay off porn, socialize and get a woman or a man, enjoy the natural most healthy and most vital energy supplier known to man kind. Making love. Present fully on this act of bliss.
When you do that, even then, try not to ejaculate. Ejaculation is soncidered in some cultures energy of life. Well, I think we could all agree.
When you are in love making, on the physical level, your energy rises and many vitamins hormons etc. gets stronger and better in kvantity. Then the feeling of it is just not describable, it comes after time and devotion, or at first try, its possible.
So, when you maintain the high level of energy you can turn it into alot more then just an orgazm.
When you ejaculate, orgazm takes your energy and sends it to space, its lost from you. It has a relaxing effect, but IF you dont ejaculate, your energy builds, in the ways you cant possible imagine. IF you dont believe me, don’t. But you got nothing to lose and try. Ohh and dont give up after few trys, its a skill, and dont judge yourself if you cant hold it and just release it. Practise makes better practice.

Sorry for a long post, sure hope I shed some light on the topic.

    In Lak’ech and be well

Just wanted to mention that most of what was said if not all goes hand in hand with Islamic teachings where masturbation is completely forbidden.(I believe for both its effect on health and society)
BTW Alexxnom and everyone else, one of the purposes of prayer in islam (which are done 5 times a day and has aspects similar to meditation) is to prevent the foul acts and lead the person to good ones.

Try praying less and masturbating more. Sounds like you have an unhealthy addiction to religion, which can lead to retarded thought patterns that can convince one that the murder of innocent people is actually a noble and holy act praised by god. Talk about NOT being healthy!

i agree with Bannakai islam is seriously the best way to stop any bad thing… if you even read about masturbation in islam you’ll find out that “Mohammed” messenger and beloved said its forbidden and if you do it with your right hand its like if you committed adultery with your “mother” with… left hands then with your sister… i think its a good reason that might let you stop it

this is just a thing of many about things like it in islam … good luck =]

    May 1, 2009 | 12:30 pm

I wanted to emphasize that meditation, exercise, jogging/running, Hatha yoga (or other kind, …meditation is part of it) helps but does not replace the total exclusion of masturbation. Your body needs to recover, and it can only recover by stopping masturbation.

What lefty wrote is true. Of course its hard to get a sexual partner when you have low self-confidence and i wouldn’t say that stopping to masturbate is a skill. In my opinion it’s more of an attitude, a question of choice and determination.

For all those people who think that non-masturbating is a religious thing should reconsider their beliefs. As i mentioned most of religions try to describe a universal truth. Your life, consciousness, intelligence originates from somewhere, which people refer to as God. You are not in a position to tell that there is no God or anything like that, simply because you don’t know the truth. But if you think with your heart (i don’t care how cheesy it may sound), you will experience something… you will start to LIVE. All of those people tried to tell you how to achieve the ultimate happiness which is in you and is independent from other things. You can reach it only by becoming clean.

The difference between masturbation and sex:
Well masturbation is a vice and that’s it. Its about your body and not your soul.
“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

And if you say that i am a religious zealot and that’s why I’m against masturbation… well then find a better argument. Please.

    P.S. Live consciously!

  35. alexxnom
    May 1, 2009 | 12:42 pm

    One more thing:

There are many who disagree, and say that scientists proved that masturbation prevents prostate cancer and its a perfectly normal and healthy habit:

Okay, now people can say that its scientifically proven. Let’s see what does it mean:

“The principles and empirical processes of discovery and demonstration considered characteristic of or necessary for scientific investigation, generally involving the observation of phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis concerning the phenomena, experimentation to demonstrate the truth or falseness of the hypothesis, and a conclusion that validates or modifies the hypothesis.”

Oh yes, now if we analyze the terms in this definition we can agree that if someone has based his empirical discovery on his own life, then he did a scientific method. This means that if someone says that he “doesn’t feel good” (physically) after masturbation it can be considered as a conclusion which modifies a hypothesis which says that masturbation is healthy.

As a result scientists shouldn’t lie so much… Masturbation has negative psychological, mental, physical effects no matter how many times you do it, because simply put its a vice, an addiction. Period.

Jacob, it may not only be linked to your masturbation, it could also be linked to your lifestyle as a whole. Do you exercise regularly? What is your diet like? These are good questions to ask yourself.

        May 17, 2011 | 10:51 am

LOL, way to avoid a chance at ACTUALLY doing a little experiment to prove your theory. Again, high levels of testosterone lead to both male-pattern baldness AND the urge to masturbate. Take some courses on logic and reasoning, and perhaps you won’t release such uneducated absurdities upon the world.

  37. masterwanker
    May 5, 2009 | 1:25 pm

Just to confirm with one of the replies – it is TRUE masturbation causes acne – this is based on my own experience. If I wank twice a day, then it is almost guranteed a breakout tommorrow morning.

    • Skunknuts
      May 17, 2011 | 10:46 am

Um, more likely that spikes/ high levels of testosterone cause both the urge to masturbate and acne. No wonder both usually peak during adolescence.

I’m truly blown away by the lack of critical thinking demonstrated by the people who believe the absurd notion that masturbation is bad. Is it no wonder that areas on the world defined by religious extremism are the most backwards awful places to live, especially for women. Yeah, contrary to popular belief, religious extremism is NOT healthy. This is based on actual objective EVIDENCE, not absurd heresay and conjecture.

      • Michael
        August 14, 2011 | 3:42 am

Actually, even when I’m experiencing these ‘spikes’ and I feel the urge to masturbate as a result, I never, never break out until I actually DO masturbate. No matter how many days pass, how horny and hormonal I may be, the acne doesn’t break until the day after I masturbate, or even just hours later. Same applies to my girlfriend.

I’m truly blown away by your own lack of open-mindedness.

I know someone’s going to tell me it’s a result of something else in my life – no, it isn’t. I’ve spent three years observing each and every time I do it, there’s an absolutely undeniable, 110% positive connection regardless of my personal attitude, emotions, life situation, health, or anything else – masturbation always caused me problems. Most, if not all, of the mentioned side-effects of masturbating are indeed real, and they all happened to me before I even began to think it was bad for me or even knew of these side effects.

By the way, masturbation can indeed cause blindness, or for the more fortunate, just some damage and nothing more. The side effects more or less become apparent (the severe ones especially) depending on how often you do it. When done less often, you may never experience eye problems, but you could have a lil’ acne here and there. If done much too often, you can have every noted effect, plus all of them amped up even more severely than usual. Some effects won’t even begin to manifest until you cross a certain line, a certain frequency of committance. I’ve noticed that with increased committance my eyes start to have problems. Serious eyestrain, sharp pains in the eyes, pressure pains, constant floaters, inability to focus, and so forth. None of these problems have ever correlated with the amount of time I spend around harshly-colored light (like red light), the amount of sleep I get or the time I spend on my laptop. Only other thing that caused eyestrain was a sinus infection I had – outside of that, masturbation has done everything else. ONLY when I jack off. Only.

Quitting is extremely difficult, especially in the first few days. Once you get past the three- or four-day mark, it gets much easier, but the toughest part is maintaining the attitude and drive to stay away from it.

Easiest way I found to quit is to treat it as though it’s not a viable option for whatever reason. Like when you’re in public, and/or around people, you can’t just whip it out and jerk on it – it’s not viable. There’s a reason, some reason, you can’t do it, I found that treating it as such when I’m alone with an urge allows me to easily minimize the urge and forget about it completely. Which is also something you do when in one of those situations where it’s ‘not viable’ – once you realize you just can’t do it given your situation, you just let it go and forget about it because you know it’s not worth thinking about anymore, for the moment. You have to keep it going beyond the ‘moment’ – it has to be for good, forever. Yes, forever. Maybe sometime in the future you’ll do it again – but don’t consider that when quitting. Just don’t do it, period. Your body can’t jerk itself off, that’s a choice only you can make.

It sounds retarded, but it really is about attitude… It really, really is. And it really, really helps to have someone supporting you. Especially if they’re a conscious sufferer him or herself.

But if you don’t take the right attitude, then all the swears in the world over quitting won’t do a ****ing thing for you. Because trust me – just trust me on this, I KNOW – you will never, ever quit until you really do seal the decision. You have to support it. You can’t go looking for ways to turn yourself on. There’s no excuse, no experimenting around – just flat-out, don’t ever incorporate masturbation into any decision you make anytime during any day. Period.

Trust me… I’ve been there… I know. I know about the side effects, I know about quitting. So does my girlfriend,s she suffers the same side effects and even she thought it was ****ing stupid when I first brought it up to her when I noticed her acne. Turns out she was doing it 1-3 times every day. When she stopped, the acne immediately cleared up completely and I noticed she was much more attentive, awake, energetic, focused, and playful – and her beautiful eyes didn’t look all sunken and tired.

Most people just echo what other people tell them… That includes doctors. They heard from some other source it was healthy, so they just believe it.

Problem is, nobody knows it’s unhealthy until they’ve stopped doing it long enough to notice the improvement in their day-to-day lives. They’re so used to the side-effects of doing it so often they think the side-effects are just normal, natural feelings in the body. They’re not.

Not doing it at all is too extreme. I’m experienced in this. I tried not doing it for about a month and when I masturbated again i felt much better for the rest of the day. I could concentrate again and my eyes could see brighter, the stress went away. Not doing it at all when you don’t even have a partner is not healthy. At least for me. I believe that if you don’t use it you lose it.

I’ve been masturbating since i was 12 years old. I am now 20 going on 21. I have experienced every symptom mentioned in your post. I would love to be free of this horrible addiction. I’ve tried swearing on my grandmother’s grave, Swearing to god, paying money to charity everything. i am still unable to kick this habit. It seems like I keep making excuses to watch pornography and masturbate. I am the smallest man in my family and i feel its because of my addiction. I met my gf a year ago and three months before i met her I lasted three moths without masturbation but after she broke up with me two months after meeting me and the depression from that made me feel like i needed to masturbate. When we firt stared having sex She was impressed with me everytime we had sex. We were having sex almost everyday for those two months and she was impressed every time. But when my habit picked up she and I noticed a decline in satisfaction because even though we had broke up we were still having sex a lot. We decided to get back together a year later and I haven’t been the same since we first started dating a ear before. I have been doing worse and worse since i started this habit. My health has declined. I get sick alomost all the time. I am always tired. The things that i used to love most are no concern of mine anymore. I cant be passionate about anything anymore. I have no sense of competition. My body is brittle and frail. My skin has acne scars from years ago because it takes me forever to heal. Masturbation has ruined my life and i wouldn’t wish this on my greatest enemy. I don’t want to lose my Girlfriend but she doesn’t deserve a passion lacking boyfriend who cant please her mentally or physically. Sorry about the rant it’s just that this is the best post about masturbation addiction I have ever seen and i just feel better talking about it. thank you

I think what siddhartha meant is: since you said that ‘When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect!’, then isn’t sex with a condom similar to masturbating (in terms of health benefits, or rather, the lack of it)?

First of all, Thank you thehealthblogger.com for this information… I started masturbating when I found a playboy magazine, I was 13. Since I am addicted to it. I jerk 3-4 sometimes 5 times during the day and night. Some of the common effects you mentioned are true. Always tired, loosing hair, sleep problems, lower back pain, concentration and memory problems and balls pain. I agree with the guy that set black circles thing, but I don’t agree about the erection, my stuff is always hard and I am not a quicky which makes my partners happy… Anyway, I suffer from other things and need your advise. I always have this low blood pressure, pale face, bad mood in the mornings, and don’t eat well… In 2004, I had to be at the hospital for 45 days, no masturbation, I gained weight, good memory, bloody and healthy face, no hair loose, I was in a good shape… I stopped masturbating for three days now, no lower back pain, no headaches, I sleep well and good concentration. That is my own experience.

You offered barely any scientific evidence to back up your claim. Your article is purely speculative. The brain cannot differentiate between masturbation and intercourse. Of course anything done in excess is never healthy. Looking at pornography is not healthy. But masturbating once or twice a week is not going to have any major detrimental effects on the body. Do you want to be walking around with blue balls all the time? Sometimes it’s necessary to release that sexual tension.

When you said “When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect! Bet you didn’t know that?!”

You’re essentially advocating unprotected sex, no? That can be much more unhealthy than masturbation. STD’s, unwanted pregnancy, etc.

this is interesting. There always seems to be a second side to everything. I have had some lower back problems (and I don’t do heavy lifting) that i think could very plausibly be (have been) an effect of my masturbating habits. I like this article. I have stopped for good. I have a friend who asked me why shouldn’t she do it if I did it, so I stopped. It is very addicting I’m not surprised that it’s kind of like heroin. I’ll definitely refer my friend to this article. Sexual looseness is not affordable. Sexuality is one of the biggest aspects of our lives and if we don’t control it, it will control us.

I got a couple of problems with your rantings about how masturbation is a terrible thing

1st, if masturbation can produce the same good feelings as a drug, without any of the chronic health effects, insane spend all your money and commit crimes to get more addiction, then what the **** is wrong with feeling good from it?

It’s proven that when you are happy and feeling good, your overall health skyrockets, currently I am a college basketball player and I have noticed that when I am in a shitty mood, depressed or have something on my mind, you play bad and your energy levels suffer. However when you are feeling good, not only does it give you a certain edge, but you make shots and your focus is much stronger

Not saying that I would masturbate before practice because it does take vitamins and minerals and proteins to produce sperm and a whole lot of energy to ejaculate, however there is nothing wrong with it. On top of that if you are eating right and exercising you should have enough energy and stamina to be able to masturbate everyday and be just fine.

Finally it’s been proven that those who masturbate often are less likely to develop prostate cancer when you grow older. I don’t have the sources but if you look it up, you’ll find it easy.

Basically, you have no reason to blast on masturbating, because although it can make you tired not able to concentrate and all that other stuff, if you are truly taking care of yourself you should have no problem

Masturbation is indeed truly evil. I am 32 and have masturbated for 13 years (3 times a week), but literally stopped 2 years ago because of severe sleeping and prostate problems. But shortly after all those health problems started to showed, which I won’t go into gory details. Fortunately I found a good Chinese doctor and he helped me a lot in the recovering process (Chinese medicine has been wrestling with these problems for two thousand years). Unfortunately because of stress I’ve taken somewhat of a step backward. I can honestly say that there were moments where I wanted to end my life but my friends and girlfriend have been supportive (I couldn’t even tell my parents)!

Not to be religious or anything, but sexual misconduct, no matter in what religion, is a great sin, and brings real bad karma – just like the law of physics – for every action, there is a reaction, and debilitating health is a only small part of that reaction.

I am still in a slow and painful recovery process but I am somewhat better now than I was 2 years ago and there is still a long road ahead.

I advise everyone that has health problem to immediately stop masturbating and seek help from a qualified doctor of Chinese medicine. Then may be for those who are sincere about changing their life around to adopt some form of spiritual lifestyle. It’ll help you refrain from tempting thoughts and may be even neutralize some of those negative karma!

This has to be the biggest load I have ever read. Many scientists have done research into this and found that masturbation is a normal, healthy practice. I notice that there were no links or citations regarding any of the lies you posted. Interesting how in the comments you claim that wet dreams are natural, and therefore not harmful. This makes no sense; either ejaculating while not in a woman is bad for you, or it isn’t. You can’t have it both ways.

I hope anyone reading this blog does their research instead of blindly believing this naivety.

I have masturbated on and off since I was about 15 or 16 years old. I used to masturbate anywhere from once a week to three times a day. I now suffer from weak erections.I am now 32 years old and suffering from weak erections. I have resolved never to masturbate again because of the damage it has caused to me both physically, mentally, and spiritually. However, I am wondering if I will ever regain normal function? Will my erections ever be as hard as they used to be? I should note that I havent masturbated in about one week. Have you ever heard of someone who got weak erections because they masturbated but then regained good hard erections after they stopped masturbating? If so ow long after they stopped did normal erections return? This is making me very sad…sometimes I feel as though I have damaged my body beyond repair and when I start to think like that I often seek comfort (if only momentarily) in the act of masturbation. Please help, I am going crazy. Any resources you could direct me to would be much appreciated. So sorry for the long post but your the only guy who has a site outlining the neg. effects of masturbation. Infact my urologist has told me that I should masturbate more to recondition my penis. I know now that this is false and I have since stopped please, please help.

    Thank you

      Hi Robert,

      Please don’t despair!

      Check this site out:

They specialise in masturbation problems and how to overcome any damage done.

I remember once a reader was overcome with masturbation and emailed me a long letter of his experience, it took him some time to recover properly, though he did recover.

He tried various things (I can’t seem to find his email though!) – though I do remember it was a combination of herbal treatment as well as some supplements and actually refraining from the act too.

      Be optimistic and positive!

      Hope that helps!

Thank you for the response…that puts my mind at ease. If you find that email, or know the specific supplements he used I would greatly appreciate it. Also do you recall how long it took him to fully recover (weeks, months, years)? How soon did he see a positive effect after starting treatment? Thank you so much for creating this blog and helping those who are suffering in silence. I truly do appreciate the help.

Hi Robert and the health blogger, I just saw you posted something about herballove. I would personally not buy any product that Dr. Lin sells. While masturbation is definitely very bad for you, there is no evidence that the mechanisms Dr. Lin “proposed” on his website are true. Furthermore, if you read his advices to people, they are along the line of “take my products and continue to masturbate (less, of course).” In fact, there is another website where people have found his products to be generally ineffective: http://recover.forumup.org/. You’ll also find people posting cases and discuss their issues on that website.

does anyone know a person who was addicted to masturbation, who, as a result of his addiction could only get very weak erections but, regained strong, hard erections after stopping masturbation altogether. How long did it take for him to regain his function??? Did he do anything other than abstain from masturbation? If so what did he do? Any advice would be much appreciated…Just wanted to say that this site has really acted to lift my spirits…its nice to know there are people out there who not only understand the negative consequences of masturbation but are willing to share information with those struggling with this very private vice. I sincerely hope everyone on this site overcomes there addiction and is able to once again find peace and happiness in their lives.

It is so funny how people will believe anything. There is NO scientific proof that masturbation is bad for you. but of course you people probably don’t know very much about how the world works around you, so i wont waste too much time here. all in all, show me hard proof, rather than your dim-witted opinionated analysis.

John, it sounds like you have some repressed homosexual issues that you need to resolve. I’m not telling you that masturbation is healthy, but from the contents of your post, your issues with masturbation seem to involve homosexuality. Perhaps you need to consider the possibility that you are gay. Many homophobes are, to an extent. On a side note, fasting IS a great way to gain sexual mastery. Sexual energy is an incredibly potent force. When harnessed properly, it can energize the upper chakras, particularly the throat, the center for higher creative will. Used unwisely, it will leak out the lower chakras or cause energetic blockages which will later manifest as illness. It also causes one to be very materialistic, one’s higher faculties being only shallow remnants of what they should be. Masturbation is no more beneficial to a left hand path practitioner, as sex energy is just being leaked out and is not being harnessed to increase the power of the lower chakras. All in all, it is a practice leading to halted spiritual development, putting any being in a weak, gray area where they are of no use to anyone, including themselves.

Wow. Thank you SO much for this post…I’m 16 and EXACTLY about 2 years ago I started masturbating. And maybe this is the reason for my awkward sleeping patterns(ironically I’m up at 4 AM right now…), acne, back pain, and slow growth. And maybe some other things that I’m not aware of. There is so much propaganda out there telling you that it’s healthy and OK, but it’s all lies. Once again, THANKS!

In a study of men ages 24 to 36 seeking treatment for infertility, Panayiotis Zavos, Ph.D., confirmed the results of earlier studies demonstrating that smoking harms sperm quality in every way, from longevity to motility. But Zavos also found that smoking affected sexual behavior. The smokers had sex an average of 5.7 times per month, while the nonsmokers reported an average of 11.6 encounters. And on a scale of 1 to 10, the smokers rated the quality of sex at a lackluster 5.2, compared to 8.7 for nonsmokers.
So it would help if to quit smoking, but abstaining from masterbation will help to. When i abstain for a while i get erection over anything.

I’m in the middle of kicking the habit at the moment. Given no degree of swearing or psychological manipulation has helped, I’ve been forced to deliberately damage the organ (but in a manner that won’t cause any real harm aside from some blood). Sandpaper ftw. Burns like Hell but I’d rather struggle with that and randiness than put up with all the pain the habit is causing me now.

I am also entirely certain it causes severe acne, if not just acne period, in many if not all people. Personal experience.

This is proof of how dangerous uninformed opinion articles can be. That’s a sin in my book. Dangerous when surity, ignorance, and arrogance are combined, as the author perfectly demonstrates.

here is a practical and proven tip

To all chronic mastubators. Stay/ live in a place which has sub zero temperature ( preferable -3 and below) and your urge to mastubate will vanish within 3 days, due to your body going to nutrition conserving mode)

(this means dont use a heater in your house and room and keep warm only by wearing warm clothing)

Post 3 days continue to live in such a place for 2 months to get rid of the habbit

Nothing else on the planet will work to get you rid of the habbit

Get your life and health back

After reading some of the comments regarding the masterbation article, i have to say im rather blown away by, and question the legitamacy of a number of the responses e.g ‘masterbation ruined my life’. My OPINION (though this word seems to be used as a disclaimer for writing useless, misinformed articles) is based on scientific findings and is not a biased article which seems to be trying to grab shock interest from people who seem to be of a rather unhealthy mental disposition. Wanking too much does, of course have very negative and often serious and depressing effects on people, however, it is important that to maintain the integrity and ensure the text relates to the title of this article, you have to understand that there is a huge difference between masterbation and having an unhealthy sexual craving and it is not the case that the two are absolutely and causely linked. It is a fact that it is safer to masterbate than to have unprotected sex (speaking in a strict, clinical sense). I am also blown away by the contraditory arguments in this article, for example..masterbation causes acne and masterbation decreases testosterone. The primary cause of acne in 12-19 year olds is testosterone, therefore to say that a loss of testosterone increses acne would require some ground breaking scientific backup and not, as seems to be the case, the opinion of somebody with free time, a computer and zero credibility

Okay these are all lies! Masturbation is actually good for you. Masturbation is good for things such as:
    * Relieving stress and releasing tension (including the obvious, sexual tension)
    * Providing a sexual outlet for people who are not having sex with a partner (whether by choice or by circumstance)
    * Alleviating pre-menstrual symptoms in some women
    * Helping to induce sleep, or conversely, helping to start the day with an energized calm
    * Strengthening muscle tone in the genital region
    * Promoting a couples’ level of sexual satisfaction in their relationship
    * Providing treatment for some types of sexual dysfunction

Don’t feel bad if you masturbate, it’s a perfectly normal thing… people of all kinds do it:
    * Infants — while not necessarily erotic, many infants touch their genitals once they learn that the stimulation feels good.
    * Children — again, not necessarily erotic, but many children also find self-stimulation pleasurable.
    * Adolescents — perhaps the classic group associated with masturbation. Many males and females masturbate regularly in their pre-teens and teens.
    * Adults — married, partnered, or single, adults ages 18-59 are actually more likely to masturbate than adolescents. What’s more, people with regular sexual partners are more likely to masturbate than singles.
    * And then there are many people, from all age groups, who rarely or never masturbate.

This is stupid. I’m 54 years old, married, have 2 kids (both of which attend MIT) and have a Doctorate in phyciatric studies. Also, I’m in the best of health, and frequently participate in triathalons and other competitions.

I’ve masturbated all of my life, and it has not affected me in any way whatsovever. I have never had any of the aformentioned symptoms.

Perhaps some of your points are true, however, the ratio between the benefits and health complications of masturbation are 20:1.

Unless you have any medical knowledge on the subject (professional education, not Google), shut your mouth, because you have NO idea what your talking about.

i think more than anything it’s the psychological effects that it has on you that causes problems. if you are an addict it must be intervening with your normal life you might not be able to complete the assignments and all, your girlfriend might not get orgasm as you are focusing on just your pleasure. if u want more info go to this site sexualcontrol.com download a free book from there it’s worth reading for all masturbation addicts.

I am a 21 year old and I have been masturbating since my early teenage years. Throughout this time I have become dependant on masturbating. I have never had sex and I do not believe in having sex until marriage therefore I find my release through masturbating. I have not been aware how dangerous masturbation is and recently I have had occasional pain in my right testicle. I found a lump there a few years ago and it was checked but it is only a cyst, I am prone to cysts. I have read about when sperm ducts become blocked and infected and this can cause occasional pain and discomfort along with occosional swelling. I think it is either discomfort or pain from the cyst or sperm ducts getting blocked. Do you know if the sperm duct will become uninfected after a period of time?

I have occasionally had fatigue from masturbation and find it difficult to concentrate when I find an opportunity to masturbate. Sleep problems also occur when I stay up late to masturbate and as mentioned I have suffered from testicle pain and discomfort.

I know it sounds as if I have a masturbation problem but I do not want to see specialists or a doctor concerning it. I do want to cure the problem so are there any hints you could be kind enough to give me to get my sexual release in other ways rather than masturbation? Will my testicle discomfort and pain go away if I stop masturbating? Are there any foods, drinks, activities I can eat, drink or do to help or any of these I need to cut out? Is it okay to masturbate occasionally or better to cut it out all together? Thank you for your time.

I’m surprised no one has said anything about being holy to the Lord. Without holiness, no one will see God (Hebrews 12:14). Do we not think about this anymore? We know that the body is not for fornication (1 Corinthians 6:13). And we are to “flee fornication” (1 Corinthians 6:18). The fornicators and homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9). He, who rejects this, rejects God (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8).

This is pretty serious stuff. It comes from the same book that tells us God loves us and all the things that make life worth living, like love, joy, peace, happiness, justice, mercy, kindness, faith, and hope. I worry because I got married hoping to not be troubled by this. Now my wife can’t have sex and I’m tempted to masturbate. I have fasted and prayed etc. I know some of you will do the Dawkins thing and say something like “God probably doesn’t exist so you can relax and enjoy life”. But this doesn’t work. Without God there is actually more anxiety because our lives are totally meaningless and worthless. It’s ridiculous to be an existentialist and try to create your own meaning because in the end you know you are only fooling yourself.

Really? There are this many comments on this article that all agree with you, and NO opposing views? I suspect foul play here. Really this article just looks to me like an uneducated religious rant. You couldn’t even fully define masturbation because of how grossed out you are. You didn’t even take the time to spellcheck (“YOU’RE having sex with yourself”…not “your”. Elementary school mistake there) The whole thing is poorly written. It looks like a paper some high school freshman wrote for their English class, proud of their “unique” ideals more than being interested in helping anyone.

This entire article seems full of, like you stated, something you read somewhere. And really? My penis absorbs minerals from women’s vaginas? Why am I even taking vitamin pills? But seriously, that’s ridiculous.

Mainly I’m writing this comment because I don’t believe this article has been up here for 2 years with no opposing comments. Will it survive the author’s closed-mindedness?

CaptainTyinKnots, thanks for the spell check!

You’re right, I have had just as many negative comments as I have had positive ones, however, nearly 99% of the negative comments have used extremely foul language and they are most definitely not appropriate to publish on the site – you may have realised this had you read the other comments.

If someone wants to make a criticism (whether constructive or not), I don’t mind accepting and publishing the comment, so long as the comment does not include swearing and general immaturity.

      January 13, 2011 | 11:54 am

Yes. I couldn’t agree more. Not only is this article ridiculously one sided, Half of what it states is just plain incorrect. Masturbation is not ‘unnatural’, all kinds of species have been doing it for millenia, babies do it, kids do it, not because they know what they are doing or because they are getting any real sexual plesure out of it, but because it is instinctive. Zinc is constantly lost from the body, it is used in the production of semen, but if this semen does not get used, it passes out in urine, meaning that masturbating leads to no significant deficiencies in any mineral. It does not affect your health in any way, in fact. It STRENGTHENS erectile muscles (obviously, if you use your arms alot, they get stronger, not weaker) and through this experimentation you can learn what you like sexually, leading to better sex. Also, do not pin religion on this, if you feel uncomfortable doing it, dont do it, but dont tell innocent kids that they will rot in hell for a normal and sinless action.

Masturbation at all ages is a part of development. Yes, babies do it out of curiosity and without ejaculating. It’s curiosity. Had you truly researched before writing this article you would probably know that. Also, if you actually did a controlled research study and had any scientific anything (quotations of verified sources, citations from scientific articles, etc.)I might see some merit in your side, however it’s blatantly one- sided and uninformed. The “so called experts” as you put it took months and sometimes years studying the very things you speak of. Interesting that almost all of that research points to exactly the opposite of what you said. I feel sort of hypocritical not citing the articles I know or looking up the countless others. A bit lazy at the moment! :) Overall, interestingly information-less article.

I agree that masturbation is a drain on the body and the mind. I know this from personal experience.

The misconception of most people I think comes was a result of a backlash towards centuries of religious and social taboos about masturbation. People used to say masturbation was wrong because it was a “sin” or “shameful”, so now a lot of people say the complete opposite. They say it’s normal, healthy, and nothing to be ashamed of.

The truths lies in discarding all these preconceptions. Personally, I’ve found that the more I used to masturbate, the more irritable I would be in the days that followed, and the less energy I would have when I would exercise. While it’s true, masturbating the day before some strenuous exercise gave me a quick boost, if I masturbated too often I’d really feel lethargic. I’d also tend to get sick (cold and fever) more often in the cold months.

I’ve gone 12 days without masturbating, which is the longest ever since before I ever got distracted by this stuff near the beginning of puberty. Really, it’s just simpler to go through life without a bad habit that serves no purpose and takes up time I could be using to do other things or simply relax.

I have now read this article from top to bottom….. and I have to say that there are very few articles that states that masturbation is bad for you. I can tell you all this much. I have been masturbating for about 11 years now and physically I’m still doing great. I have a small grey patch on my head, my back hurts from time to time and memory loss is a natural occurrence. The moment I start wondering what my name is or where I stay…. I will know that I stopped too late.

Everywhere I turned…. Sexual fantasies floats around….. worst thing is that your mind encourage your body and then other times your body start and your mind just follows…. And before you see it… your masturbating….

Masturbating is a drug….. Definitely!!!! Is stopping easy…. NO!!!! not so easy….

Masturbating was killing my Soul / Spirit. During masturbating I’m in a different place for those few moments, for afterwards…. It was like chunks of my Soul / Spirit was being ripped out. I know that this is not right, if Masturbating was a good thing, my Soul / Spirit should not be getting hurt.

I have been praying a lot lately. I have been clean for 15 days, but I’m planning to stay clean and far away from Masturbating. Each day is a challenge, some days are easy…. Like today was not a very easy day, ones thoughts fills one’s mind and the funny thing is…. That’s how I come to find this article. I’m very glad that I did.

During this 15 days, I can definitely say that my Soul / Spirit is doing better, I can now easier talk to woman and keep concentration on a toping “when in conversation”, I feel more confident and a lot happier, I sleep better and have extra energy and my back…. Well that is still sore… but I blame the chairs I sit on…..

It’s not easy…. and no matter what the professionals tell you, I am a 100% sure that it is not good for once Soul / Spirit.

please for the love of all that is right with the world ignore this person’s post. masturbation is normal and healthy. over-masturbation is a different matter entirely.

it is people like this that are screwing with the modern era. they admit that there is NO scientific backing to their statements and yet still maintain that they, not the scientists that study these matters in depth, are correct.

masturbation is good, just don’t over indulge, same as anything else really.

Before you read any of this, I want to stress the effect of OVER masturbation/ejaculation is dependent on the person, some people are really negatively affected by it (eg. me). Whereas my friends, who does it hundred times more often, do not.

For those who wants to know why OVER masturbation (or even EXCESSIVE sexual intercourse) is bad and is causing all the problems you are experiencing (and will eventually experience), I suggest you take a look at the following textbook on Google Books:

Specifically look up kidneys and essence. You can also see it at Amazon:

It is a Chinese medicine textbook for accupuncturists and herbalists written by Giovanni Maciocia. It is obviously dense and the eastern concepts need some getting used to.

In Chinese medicine, the physical body and the mind is connected – when you ejaculate TOO MUCH, you are depleting essence (your life force), which literally weakens your entire body, and will ultimately have devastating consequences (which I don’t need to reiterate).

In addition, essence provides clarity to the mind (thus affecting memory and concentration), and that is why religious people promotes celibacy.

Once you understand this, you can see that over ejaculation PARTLY explains why many males are experiencing ED, because ejaculation weakens the kidneys, which is the organ that powers your penis in the first place. It is a vicious cycle. With this in mind, you will understand that ED drugs ultimately make the problem even worse.

Martial artists, especially those practicing internal martial arts (e.g. Tai-chi, and Shaolin), have developed ancient practices to transform sexual energy to increase overall health and vitality. Certain Buddhist monks even developed internal practices to prevent wet dreams.

A famous text for transforming sexual energy is the Marrow Washing Classic written by Da Mo, a famous Indian Buddhist monk, over a thousand years ago:

BTW, Da Mo is also the monk who developed the martial arts practiced by Shaolin Monks.

For me, I found out this rather late, I have been abstinent for 2 years now and am still recovering from the effects of over masturbation.

Perhaps instead of personal opinion and conjecture one should educate oneself and read articles that contains studies and scientific fact: http://www.scarleteen.com/article/advice/is_masturbation_healthy

Simply put masturbation is a natural and healthy part of life, and there are a myriad of factual articles that state such. And kindly before I hear the religious arguments, realize that some of the same religions that condemn masturbation OK childhood marriage, multiple wives and stoning people for adultery.

I haven’t used any foul language nor immature themes so hopefully my post wont fall afoul of the rather ‘interesting’ editorial slant of this site.

the health blogger, studies show 95% of men masturbate and 89% of women masturbate, there are completely healthy people that mastrbate regularly and have none of your so called “symptoms”, studies also show that it is indeed healthy to moderately masturbate. It becomes unhealthy if it causes problems with a partner, or if it is done in public, or when it causes a person to feel bad about themselves, and I doubt 95% and 89% of all men and women feel guilty about it or the numbers would most likely be lower than that. As for myself, I masturbate moderatley and for anyone who would like to know, I am quite fine.

Personally, I am opposed to homosexual acts/marriage for religious reasons (also pre-marital sex) but I am gay myself. Do you think homosexuality is a choice and that it is changeable? Because believe me, there is plenty of SCIENTIFIC evidence to the contrary.

man, seriously????? all your doing is causing trouble. your making masturbation seem like its the worse thing that anyone can do and your replys to people arent helping, this whole article is un true. Masturbation is normal. monkeys even do it. it doesnt make you depressed or sad unless you dwell on the topic of it and worry and then go read articles like this on it. i masturbate whenever i feel like it, watch porn whenever i feel like it, and still have amazing sex with my girlfriend. im 17 years old, and this is all not relevant. let me explain:

    - Fatigue – yeah, for like 15 minutes after. then you feel refreshed, your mind clear of sexual tensions that blocked you from enjoying the rest of the world.

    - Lower back pain – I dont know where you heard this, maybe your masturbating in a wierd position or something man.

    - Thinning hair/hair loss – its just low DHT caused by RISE in testosterone, which can easily be cured by counteracting with certain foods. The leading cause of hair loss is stress. and masturbating every once and awhile reduces stress.

    - Weak erection – Not true, masturbation can strenghthen the muscles the penis uses to get hard, thus creating a stronger erection. The only cause of a weak erection would be you forget how to get stimulated through just feelings, and rely on porn to get hard. just saying that will cause anxiety and lead to weak erections. if you believe it will happen, it will happen.

    - Premature ejaculation – yeah, if all you do when you masturbate is jerk as hard and fast as you can for 30 seconds, blow it off, and go to sleep. masturbation can be used to treat pre. eja. by helping you identify the stages you are at while masturbating, and applying this knowledge when you are with a female to adjust your tempo or when to take a break. Anxiety will also cause P.E., which you probably caused a sum of people to have.

    - Groin/testicular pain – this is true, if you try to blow a load 4 times in a row. this pain can actually come from NOT masturbating. blue balls dude. thats god telling you that you need to shoot your splooge.

    - Concentration and memory problems – Once again, not accurate information. These problems come from the anxiety and depression that the masterbatie feels because they think they are doing something wrong (even though it is natural and HEALTHY). The anxiety will make you lose memory, and will cause you to not be able to concentrate, bc all you will be thinking about is how bad it is, bc youre preaching all this nonsense. If you believe it will happen or that its true, then it will become true, and it will happen.

    - Sleep problems – …i sleep just fine, better even, after a sweet sesh. and when i dont, like 3 times a week, i still sleep perfectly fine.

people, ive been slapping my monkey since i was able too, ive been looking at porn since i figured out how too. im extremely healthy, in great shape, have plenty of friends, am not ever depressed, and have a healthy sexual relationship with my girlfriend. If you believe all this, then yes, your going to experience the “side effects” bc your going to anticipate them and they will come. Just move on and say, hey man, i dont believe this stuff.
    this is all

revised it a bit to make it acceptable. you should still leave my original(it has more power)
    changed my name too.

    May 15, 2010 | 7:54 am

I agree with you totally, dude. I had been masturbating since 16.I often felt okay then but in the long run,it made me weak and I am having all the symptoms you described. Sure, when you are young,it feels okay, you protest strongly that there’s scientific proof it’s ‘healthy’ but wait until you get older, then you will feel the effects. You may not feel it,but others will notice on your face that you are fatigued, you look older than your age and many other things. Of course, other than refraining from constant masturbation, you must have a healthy lifestyle. I didn’t realize how much it had affected my health until a colleague commented on my pale looking face and I went to see a Chinese medicine practitioner. He said I had the health of a sickly 70 year old! I got away from all technology(source of porn)for 2 weeks which stopped my habits. When I returned to civilization,I noticed the circles around my eyes had gone and I felt more energetic. So,for those who may feel nothing wrong, try asking friends how you look to them. Oh,and don’t bother replying to my comment. I’m just passing through…

Thank you very much The Health Blogger.

These ‘personalities’ who detract from your article and the many positive or supportive comments, always mention the same thing:

An all-capital designation for a word means it could
mean anything, and usually it is a study of opposites. This is the reason why corporations are named MCDONALDS – they are not owned by scotsmen, first off. This is the reason why the UNITED STATES, a Delaware municipal corporation, refers to you as MR. HEALTH BLOGGER in your mail. It’s not actually your mail, but the agents and officers of the USA et al, hope you pick it up and act on it. They need your energy; they have none of their own.

    ** Really. **

Where SCIENCE, MEDICINE, or ‘LAW’ are concerned, these are fictions today and at least going back 100 years. Besides that provable fact, it is a provable, unavoidable fact that very little if any MEDICINE, is scientific. The AMA (AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION) is neither american, nor medical. It may not even qualify as an association. It is merely a group of thugs designed to squeeze out all the other 149 kinds of healing medicine; so anything reported by a PSYCHIATRIST, a dubious profession, is to be considered as if from the lips of lucifer.

To understand how there are so many people who serve the snake today, it is necessary to know that the founding of the FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM was at the same time as the AMA. Like the AMA, the FED is neither federal, nor does it have reserves. It is not a system in the sense of an orderly, natural approach to life; it is instead designed to tear the foundation out of civilization.

The main proponent of masturbation is natural, along with sex with children:

A careful study of KINSEY RESEARCH reveals that it was and is, a fraud.

Alfred was a sick and demented man, who could hold down his job enough when supported by agents working for the same conspiracy as those who owned/operated the FED.

When his work was loosing it’s luster, the same people on the same conspiracy, the officers and agents of HOLLYWOOD, created a film with Liam Nielson as ALFRED KINSEY.

So, bravo to not feeding the trolls! I have roundly trounced them thusly.

To those who have a problem with masturbation, and the ill effects: Believe in what you can see without any third-party interference. We must disregard the phoney maps we have been given of the territory, and instead make our own maps.

Masturbation is a disease. One is at a state of dis-ease, not one with nature – by doing it.

Brothers! We are called not to do such a thing to our perfect bodies given to us by the most high!

Let the light shine! And burn the eyes of those who would read this blog and thus block them from commenting their vitriol and filth.

Kudos to the man behind ‘the health blogger’: Your article is fantastic. Now please delete all those who disagree; I never read most of their comments; they are repetitive and show at minimum, blind faith in a broken way, and many demonstrate they are with the forces of death, the conspiracy of evil, which we men must separately, then together, rise up to say

Hey Health Blogger, I was reading into this site a while back and I was reading a question which you didn’t actually, but instead just insulted the guy’s intelligence (a little unprofessional if you ask me). I believe it was Siddartha’s question: “what is the difference between masturbation and doing sexual intercourse using a condom ?” That question actually rose in my head reading your initial article, because you said something like,

“Did you know that every time you ejaculate, you lose approximately 3-5mg of zinc, that’s nearly a third of your RDA… When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female ‘vaginal secretions’ which balance this effect! Bet you didn’t know that?!”

3 others had the same question I did as well, trying to justify Siddartha’s statement, but I don’t think you replied… With the amount of safe sex being practised in North America today, it’s only logical to think that by wearing a condom, not only is a man preventing his sperm from entering a woman’s vagina, but in turn preventing a woman’s ‘vaginal secretions’ from being absorbed as well. So i’ll ask again, what is the difference between safe sex, where no vaginal secretions are received, and masturbation?

In reply to your question, there is no difference between the two acts other than one being with the opposite sex and the other with oneself.

Thanks for the information. E’s information on mind/body was esspecially informative to me. I’ve been masturbating since 12 or 13. I tried to fight it but was torn to pieces. I’ve reformed the other things in my life and now ready to tackle this beast again. Round 2… FIGHT!

  117. anonymous
    June 4, 2010 | 1:02 pm

I’ve been masturbating since 9 or 10 and often ejaculate more than once a day. I do suffer chronic fatigue at times, or loss of mental concentration, and lots of sleep problems, and sometimes zinc problems (evident in my fingernail beds). However, some of this is not because of masturbation. I think this article is only 40-50% correct at most. As you will see later, some of it is actually psychological.

Masturbation is both healthy and unhealthy, just like most things that are blown out of proportion. Studies show that consistent ejaculation prevents prostate cancer. Makes sense to me — keep the plumping clear.

I can say, however, that my wife and I have been married for a year-and-a-half, and I’m still a virgin (technically speaking, since I haven’t had actual intercourse). She is undergoing therapy, but she has a problem with a tight, muscle-bound vagina. She can’t have sex until the problem is remedied (I can’t remember the name of the complication, it was caused by a non-sexual childhood injury). Therefore, I have no choice but to masturbate as I always have. Other married men can have this problem too (especially if their wife experiences traumatic surgery or rape). So pick your poison but don’t gulp down too much.

Be realistic… stay away from pornography, and don’t be idle.

  118. Masturbation is srs bsns
    June 5, 2010 | 3:57 pm

I call bs, though I can’t figure out why anyone would take this to be truthful. I have better concentration, an overall better attitude, and I often become very sleepy right after masturbating. I do not have any health problems whatsoever, and I am not addicted to it.

Also, I am a female and I have a boyfriend who also masturbates, and he lasts for hours… ;) Pretty sure he has no health problems as a result, either.

I agree that sex feels better, but when you’re in a temporarily long-distance monogamous relationship, what else is there? People get horny! No use in denying yourself some relief and thinking it’s some dirty, sinful, unhealthy act. It’s natural.

  119. This Is How You Stop
    June 8, 2010 | 5:09 pm

    Great job the health blogger.
Sites like this are rare. Mainly because medicine, science and other influential institutions like politics, churches, music industry, Hollywood, media, internet… are all corrupted… and sadly only few people know that on the top of the pyramid is Satan.

    This is my story:

I’m 18, and I’ve been a victim of masturbation when I was 16, although I didn’t completely stopped. When I remember that time I don’t want to. I was filling sick, I was looking sick, I hated myself, I lost weight and muscles, my grades in school fell, I hated everyone and everything… it was in short a Dark Age of my life. The worst, I didn’t realize what was the cause of my problems. They say puberty, well, no man should feel that way. I mean, it’s not humane. Until one day I heard from one student that masturbation is a sin. I did not mind if it’s a sin. Little later I heard that God put limits only to make our lives better. Than I started to limit frequency of masturbation. My life turned around. Now I am able to refrain from masturbation for more than a month, and due to all new knowledge I found about masturbation I’m definitely going to stop.

And finally this is how you get rid of bad habit (I learned it on All Power Seminar which site I advertised earlier).

1.There are two powers that control your life: a)Desire to joy.
    b) Desire to avoid pain.
The reason why bad habits are created is because we associate pleasure with them instead of pain.

2.There is something in brain called neuropathways. Every time you do something neuropathway in the brain is created. Each time you repeat the same thing the path/connection becomes becomes stronger. Thus the habit is created. Some studies show that all habits are actually mechanic. For example, when person who smokes sit on the same place for a long period of time his/her brain is telling him/her to start smoking because a neuropahway has been created between being bored and taking a cigarette
so person automatically takes it. For example I noticed that sometimes, when I don’t masturbate for a long period of time I do the same thing I would do to my penis to my finger. It’s because the neuropathway has been created between sexual arousal and masturbation act.

So to stop masturbation there are two things you have to do:

    1. You have to convince yourself that masturbation is causing pain to you rather than joy. You think it’s just the opposite. Think about it again, for few seconds of joy you’re gonna make your life miserable. Whenever you think about masturbation remember all the negative effects. Imagine all the pain this action is going to cause. Then, remember all the benefits of not masturbating.
    Imaging wonderful life without masturbation.

    2. Every time you feel need to masturbate you interrupt the pattern. You say “NO”. “It’s not worth it.” Say: “I’m better than that. I’m the winner. I’m in control.” Or just say “I AM” You can say it loud and clear. The more times you interrupt the pattern neuropathway becomes weaker, until it completely disappears.

Of course there are some other thinks you should do:
    Don’t watch porn
Avoid touching your penis too much
If you are seriously addicted avoid spending too much time naked and thinking about sex

You can also ask God for help. If you pray frankly you’ll have supernatural power. God is your friend and he is, more than anything, willing to help you. You just have to allow him.

First off, how does masturbation cause problems such as hair loss, a weak erection, premature ejaculation, memory loss, and testicular/groin pain (please provide some evidence for this). Secondly, you state that a loss of 3mg of zinc (compared to the 11mg needed per dy in males) is a major problem in masturbation. Well, 3mg of zinc is very little. In fact, you can gain 12mg of zinc from eating 0.47 cups of whole wheat. Please take this into consideration. To all other people out there, masturbation is perfectly healthy. I myself have masturbated everyday for about a year and experience no harmful effects from it. Just because something is good doesn’t mean you are addicted to it. Also, do not just believe one source. Do some research on your own. Thank you.

I have only ever met ONE person (other than kids and stuff) that DIDN’T masturbate, and she is one of the most depressed and ****** up people I know.
Don’t you think that sexually aggrevated crimes would occur more often if people did not relieve themselves?

  125. NA
    July 12, 2010 | 12:01 am

This post is absolutely absurd! It flies in the face of both modern science and basic common sense.

Depletion of zinc from masturbation makes little sense but even assuming that’s true, going on to suggest it can cause memory problems (which can be instantly cured by ceasing to masturbate) is completely illogical and ignorant. Think about it. If that were true, low dietary zinc would be a major cause of memory/brain problems, but is it? no. Saying masturbation causes brain problems is as wrongheaded and ignorant as saying it makes you grow hair on your hands. (Which it doesn’t. Believe me.)

The article goes on to say “the same effects [mental degradation from zinc depletion] should occur when one has sexual intercourse, right? Sorry to disappoint! When a man has sexual intercourse with a female, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance this effect!” Seriously? You’re asserting that the mineral zinc is absorbed INTO THE PENIS (what about using a condom?) in order to balance the zinc lost during ejaculation. First, you don’t absorb minerals through the skin. That’d be like getting your RDA of minerals from swimming in lake. Your skin is there for a reason and it does a good job of keeping things out. Second, there’s no reason to believe that the amount of zinc “absorbed” is exactly equal to the amount lost. That just doesn’t make sense.

Since it doesn’t make sense that the minerals “lost” in masturbation are “reabsorbed” during sex, either both acts lead to mental degradation or both don’t. I should hope it’s obvious which is the case.

The disclaimer that comes before the article (saying it’s based on anecotes and not any real evidence) should be much stronger: it should read “this article is blatantly false and completely unscientific. Don’t believe what you read here.”

I find opinions are like chemichals, they can be used as drugs and as poisons, but most are just toxic. This is truly and epically TOXIC. I wish most people would waste there “opinions” in there home inbetween their 4 walls. Some people have a hard enough time coming to grips with masturbation(do not pardon the pun). This just makes it all the more difficult. Any one thing that could be addictive should be handled with care. I masturbate. I hope I dont go blind. I’m sure I won’t.

this is a subconsious lie to everyone, we all get hair loss, we all start to loose our memories, we all start getting lower back pains some time in life.

but this human “fool” is trying to trick you people out of “nature” the way its worked for hundreds of thousands of years.

ever heard of a monkey getting zinc fatigue?
ever heard of a monkey getting lower back pains?
ever heard of a monkey getting bald?
all because it masturbated a few times a day when it was borred…. no you have not.

…worrying about. You lose minerals when you pee and when you sweat, and you lose your hair when you age. Dear God, alert the press. The only problem we have to worry about from too much masturbation is a shortage of Jergens and Kleenex. Whoever wrote this is a small time overzealous muck raker that likes to stir everyone’s crap up, and can’t even write well while doing it.

This is just ridiculous. Masturbation is normal. Healthy or unhealthy has more to do with with whether or not it becomes an addiction that disrupts your sleep, etc. If a man has sex with his woman, using a condom, every day, he is not getting his zinc back (LOL). Should we say that condoms are unhealthy as well?

Here is something that wasn’t up in my previous post – this is a medical text-book that was published in the late 1800′s by a medical doctor that described precisely all the symptoms from excessive masturbation/sexual activities:

And of course, just like now, that got ridiculed by the doctor’s own contemporaries and fell out of favor.

So basically you’re saying, don’t masturbate, just have unprotected sex… I don’t know about you but if I don’t masturbate for over a week, I get crazy horny and desperate to blow my load. So there’s no way it’s healthier for a sexually active young person to never masturbate.

The text is absolute truth. I have done it for 10 years and I have 2 major symptoms.

Head aches and shaking of hands and a little weak memory. Which all have been reported many many times.

Also it definetly makes me old sooner than normal.

Masterbation is absolutly unhealthy, so addictive, even unnormal. Because good feelings during real sex will produce many chemicals in the body that we won’t have them in masterbation. (I have studied some medicine)

in the end it humiliates healthful life.

Not quite sure how I ended up on this corner of the internet. Random link traded from place to place.

I feel compelled to give an honest outcry to this, despite the fact that it’ll be ignored or berated and I could just as easily troll you all to a far more amusing effect.

To start with, I feel like there were necessary words missing from this entire article. They would be “too” and “much”. The majority of what you’re claiming is more or less true though perhaps not as dramatic as you’ve presented it. I can’t argue that wacking it too much will more or less drain your batteries. My issue is more with your logic. It’s possible to get cirrhosis or die driving to work if I pound 8 shots of jack daniels every morning and evening, but are these valid reasons why having a glass of wine with dinner should be considered unhealthy? Should I never eat a burger again just because if I ate ten a day I’d be a land whale?

It absolutely is normal, natural and healthy. It’s part of how we operate biologically, and you can throw any textbook responses you want at it, it won’t mean anything if you cherry pick the texts. If god didn’t want us to masturbate he would have made our arms shorter.

If god didn’t want us to masturbate he would have made our arms shorter.

      Don’t agree with that.

        May 27, 2011 | 12:55 am

Maybe not shorter arms, but why make a clitoris? And don’t say it’s to make “lovemaking” more pleasurable, because that little organ (which is entirely dedicated for the purpose of pleasure) is inconviently separated from the vagina- if it was for that purpose, it would’ve been placed where it could be stimulated more easily. Truth of the matter is, humans have a sexual drive that needs to be satisfied.

I’ve noted two things about the people agreeing with you: either they suffer from an addiction to masturbation, hence the NEGATIVE effects (follows the idea that too much of a good thing can be bad), or they display a sense of guilt and anxiety (often religious) over this practice. If you feel guilty or anxious about something, more often than not, you feel STRESSED.

Masturbation, in proper doses, releases stress. Acne COULD be due to the increase in testosterone, but in a balanced individual, this isn’t too much of an increase to suddenly pepper your face with blemishes. Obviously teens are more prone to it, seeing as chemical imbalances are more prevalent in adoloscence. And as for decreasing sex drive, this may hold somewhat true for men, seeing as they can’t go right back at it after releasing. But this, in PROPER doses, does not affect sex drives. Also, many partners find mutual masturbation satisfying, but masturbation has another benefit for couples, seeing as when you know what gets you going and how to get it done, it makes things easier to direct your partner. Pleasurable for you, confidence-booster for your partner when they see how much they satisfy you.

What a ramble. Well, good day to you all, don’t repress yourself for too long, and if you’re an addict, seek treatment! Guys worrying about your souls, calm down, you’re stimulating nerve endings and having them release neurotransmitters- you do the same when you eat deliciously satisfying food, and most sperm will die in a vagina or end up in a discarded condom anyways, so why fret?

Im sure the christian movement would love too see every drop of semen on the earth used for the fertilization of eggs, advancing the expansion of the human race to obliterate all else in its path.Religions such as christianity, judaism and islam are essentially the same and are designed to out breed competing cultures in a sort of world domination type theme. It is these movements which have brainwashed you into thinking that masturbation is bad.Same with marriage.
Extreme over masturbation will have negative side effects but once a day to once a week, depending on age is quite healthy.

I dont quite I agree with you.
Because what you are saying is that eyaculating is harmful somehow, and therefore sex is harmful,it´s a strange analogy since masturbating and having sex brings the same result:sperm is released.
so how can masturbating be bad,and sex good?doesn´t make any sense.
On the other hand I agree that overdoing anything is unhealthy.

    hey, check out my blog.
my goal is abstain from masturbation for one year.

  147. Random
    November 5, 2010 | 6:50 am

Well, I’m kind of in the middle of this debate. I have masturbated for about 10 years now, since I was 14. I am now 24, I did have a porn addiction, which ruined my life and after I quit and switched to daily masturbation without porn I thought things would get better. They did get better in some ways, but in other ways they got worse.

Now I’m masturbating once a week and I definitely feel a lot better. I notice that my testosterone and energy levels are higher and I feel more mentally sharp until of course the week is over and I masturbate. I find meditation helps keep me calm on the days I don’t masturbate. I’m still unsure if I should quit the habit completely unless I find indisputable evidence.

The longest I’ve gone without masturbating was 30 days and definitely felt better mentally, but very stressed so that is why I switched to once a week. Health blogger, what are your thoughts on this for someone like myself that has cut down and noticed benefits, will my benefits increase further or will they reach a peak and then stop? How do you deal with the stress and high levels of sexual frustration if you can’t have sex?

    Thank you

    • the health blogger
      November 10, 2010 | 7:18 pm

Random, this “energy” that we build up is natural and it has to be let out in natural ways. Of course to keep it in your body is not good, as you yourself have experienced this firsthand.

If you cannot let this energy out naturally, I have read that fasting can considerably help reduce and control this desire and hence help with the high levels of stress and sexual frustration.

      • Random
        November 10, 2010 | 10:02 pm

Thanks for the reply health blogger. I would like to do fasting, but the thing is I am already skinny and fasting might make me borderline anorexic.

However, I have heard on certain websites, that cutting out on “specific” foods that inflame the genitalia can go a long way to keeping sexual frustration low.

Also to reduce my high levels of stress I can double my meditation from once a day to twice a day plus lift weights to keep stress down and build muscle.

Jogging works too and I have tried that, but you’d have to stop at one point or you’ll get too skinny. Unless your overweight than maybe it is not such a bad idea.

Do you think these methods might work better? I’m still going on with the once a week habit btw, and it’s fine for 6 of the 7 days of the week, the day after I feel terrible though, but the other days I feel better as each day passes by.

Definitely an improvement over doing it daily, but I still feel it is not enough and that abstinence is the way to go, but abstinence is not easy unlike once a week which is not too difficult to do at least or me.

          Random, you’re welcome.

It’s good to hear you are improving.

I have also read that avoiding certain foods (especially those which create a lot of heat in your body, e.g. ginger) can help reduce one’s desire, though everyone is different.

For me, training can actually increase my desire :)

Don’t give up, with persistence comes victory.

Thanks for your response. I’ll try my best to cut down, even if I just manage to cut it down to once a month as the furthest I can go.

Then that’s fine and obviously it’s better to not do it ever, but in my opinion the more realistic route is simply to cut it down as much as possible without causing any unnecessary stress.

So I see many views on here again.
The truth is, at least what i figured out and many more, you can use it or abuse it. Its a choice wich can lead to an addiction. At least it did for me. Sperm, has the bigest power potential, it is the only energy wich can duplicate or multiplate. It keeps you healthy among other processes. When you run out of sperm, due to ejaculation, then the body is looking for another energy resource besides liver, wich is the main organ to reproduce sperm. IT looks for energy in other organs wich eventually causes diseasse becouse the bodys defense imune system decreases.

So, it not wrong, its just a matter of how u use it. Wrong or right is just the judge ego does, of its many functions. When you masturbate for long time, energy level is low. Some may not notice it, but its what the body is feeling. It also differs becouse many people are different structured.

About the religious views, one must find his own peace with it in any form of religion. Its just an agreement you agree to.

For my point of view, also depends, how you masturbate. If you watch porn, or fantasize about some girl or guy, whatever, that in my opinion is even more damaging. Becouse everyone is well conected and feels the flow of uncouncious energy some one emitts while having an illusional union of sex. If one purely masturbates only for the sake of masturbation and loving one self(girls do that more often, while guys tend to fantasize more on personas)it less harming and could have a loving effect on a rare masturbation basis. Rare meaning one in a year or month, depends of the structure and emotional level of an individual.

So, keep those hands busy with a more constructive ways, couse it surely will benefit you greater more.

    Respect to all

Sperm is not produced in the liver, it is produced in the testes. Sperm is not a source of energy. (Read a book) Why is it more harmful to fantasize and masturbate? Answer these questions.

    Let’s see here.
1: Fatigue: Lack Of sleep: Basically the same thing. Too much caffeine.

2: Hair loss: It’s a genetic trait, not something linked to masturbation.

3: Weak Erection: My erection is as strong as a male who doesn’t masturbate(Almost guaranteed this doesn’t exist outside of Israeli religion.)

4: Premature Ejaculation? Wtf? I last longer in bed than most other males I know, and trust me, I do know.

5: GRoin/Testicular Pain: Once again, genetic. Or ya know, chapped skin from not using lube while masturbating.

6: Concentration and Memory Problems: Once again. Genetic/ or can be linked to lack of sleep.

and finally, sleep problems. To much caffeine, or genetic. Ever heard of insomniacs? I’m sure they masturbate too much.

ALl of these can be commonly explained and can be found in almost every person you expect to find.

Oh, I forgot, back pain, get a better bed.

Ta-Da? Reasonable explanations for every one of those.

You guys are so ignorant. Masturbation is completely healthy for you in moderation. Consistent use not only helps to prevent prostate cancer but also helps to relieve tension and anxiety. Overuse can be a problem but that effect is the same with almost anything. How dare you people try to push blame on others for this. In no way does it harm the memory, give sleeping problems, give pain, or ESPECIALLY premature ejaculation. When the person masturbates frequently it actually desensitizes the penis which makes the person not only have more control over how long they last due to constant training of the groin muscle, but it helps the person last longer as well. YOU may get fatigue and a weak erection, but I don’t :] You people act like this is some terrible thing. It’s completely natural.

so prostglandins are absorbed and replace zince is that it?

What bullshit. this article is lame, no scientific evidence, it is based on opinion rather than facts. Whats astounds me is that how much false information this article has.

This article prevents young teenagers from healthy masturbating activity. When I was 15 I thought wanking was wrong and have effect on the body but nothing happened. When a person gets older the less masterbation he/she does.

During puberty, hormones are on a rage and its crazy for teenagers becuse they are more sexually active than average adults.

According to my personal observation and experience, I concur with this article. There is nowhere in the literature where the health of masturbation (or sex, as far as I can see) are demonstrated to be necessary. The only thing I have seen sex/masturbation be argued to be good for is for reducing heart disease and prostate cancer; these can be done by eating well, exercising, and using saw palmetto for a healthy prostate. I have doubts that a prostate is really that susceptible to any damage if you live a healthy [organic/holistic] lifestyle. This writing especially helped me dissent from the common theory that sex/masturbation are healthy (http://www.dlshq.org/download/brahma_nopic.htm). In my new understanding, the loss of semen is exhausting to the nervous system of the body – you have to give life to create life, and when you aren’t creating life you’re committing suicide. That’s why lust has been called a vice from times immemorial – because males are harming themselves. I suspect that there is a similar phenomenon with females or that they have other equal but different moral/physical challenges and that sex might not be their primary one. But, they do menstruate monthly and lose nutrients, that might be one analogue of how men become weaker through losing semen, for women are thought to be the “weaker gender”. Overall, I think the topic of masturbation hasn’t been thought through all the way and that there are an infinite variety of better things one could do with his/her time and talents.

Well the group that thought they would lose weight and gain muscle ACTUALY GAINED MUSCLE AND LOST WEIGHT!!! i am from China and i have this habit for long years. I don’t have other symptoms listed only the problem of the brain. There are 2 big forums also about this topic in China and the patients have same trouble with people here. That is right China had this herbal medicine 2000 years ago and they often gave examples for ancient emperors ,who died early becasue of indulgence in sex, while those could live longer who didn’t do so. And why people in Israeli are smart and very good in business because they don’t have this habit.I believe in masturbation is not a good behavior. The best way i think is to quit this habit, even some people talked about the herbal medicine, but from the feedback from other net friends it doesn’t work much to those who have long years habit. After all those medicine used for so long years and the formula never changed. But people lived in a quite different environment compared with the ancient. Hope everyone recovers well.

Wow, most ridiculous article I’ve read in a long time. Love the disclaimer about how there is no objective reason to believe what is nothing more than one unqualified person’s opinion lol.

What is absolutely unhealty is feeling GUILT about a completely natural activity. 99% of people masturbate, and 1% lie about it. If one looks at the most sexually repressive societies, the ones that mandate the covering up of a woman’s body, for example, the pathology of denying healthy basic human drives is so apparent. In fact, denying one’s true nature more often than not leads to unhealthy obsessive thinking and actions, definitely quite the opposite of the blather presented by the author.

This article is equaninomous to something written in the 1700s entitled, ‘Contrary to popular belief, the earth is flat.’ People, take a deep breath, and stop beating yourselves up over a totally natural release.

Um, reported rapes, or the actual reality??? Am I mistaken that raped women are often blamed for getting their rapists ‘in the mood’ for raping!!?? Hmm, you know what– If these rapist men could self-pleasure and utilize the god-given release of masturbation, without dealing with the idiotic guilt caused by a backwards repressive culture, perhaps the high incidence of rape could be reduced rather swiftly.

On another note, I read that in Libya, Gaddafi loyalists are taking Viagra in order to facilitate the gang rape of women who are seen as being on the side of revolution. Wow, so very holy.

By the way, I am not anti-Muslim, but rather generally disgusted by any backward extremist ideology, especially radical Christianity. Human beings are unique in the world because we have the ability to use logic and rationality to understand our world. What a waste of our god-given gifts to rely on an antiquated, demonstrably false, hypocritical, self-contradictory explanations that our earlier, less informed brethren used to describe reality….

It’s actually rather funny how religious extremists in the USA talk the most crap about Islam, yet, in reality, they have much in common regarding their common rejection of logic and rationality, and their shared holier-than-thou judgmentality, and rampant utterly embarrassing hypocrisy. Gotta love how many priests turn out to have molested kids, used drugs, etc….and, likewise, Mr. religion, Osama Bin Laden was found with pounds of marijuana and a huge stash of pornography. How absurd, after talking about the decadence and sin, as usual the one doing the preaching turns out to be a total hypocritical douchebag.

Skunknuts, before posting my previous reply to you, I actually deleted a part which described the “reality” you talk about, I gave the benefit of the doubt that you would not say something like that.

I appreciate your short discourse on some aspects of current politics, however I question your sources coupled with your self-analysis on two distinct subjects which are in no way related. I’ll explain. Since when was Gaddafi and and his “crew” ever “holy”?

If I had used the same level and approach as yourself, I would start considering the views and actions of someone like Hitler to be aligned with his Christian belief.

Now, we both know that is not the case, and out of common knowledge and common sense I know that Hitler did not follow the tenets of his faith.

So for you to judge Gadaffi and Co. from the perspective of Islam is somewhat unfair and evident of your level of understanding, at best.

Osama bin Laden – lol! What was your source for that? My friend, I appreciate your views and have respect for you, but this is not good. Was it the same people who told us that Iraq had WMD and hence the Government based all their (fake) facts on a tentative PhD thesis (and also plagiarised) or that so called extremists from caves in Afghanistan somehow plotted 9/11? Or was it the people who claim that the swine flu was a pandemic and we need to take precaution etc.? What happened there? Come on maaan!

Skunknuts, if you were to put someone in a brand new ferrari, someone who has never ever driven in their life – however they have read ever theoretical book on the subject of driving etc. You then ask them to drive the ferrari and lo and behold…they crash it! Who would you blame? The car or the driver?

      Similarly, don’t judge so quickly.

Gadaffi is not a representation of Islam and may never be, the same goes with Hitler etc.

Back to the topic, I see your perspective on my article, and in all honesty I really need to change it as I don’t agree with many of the points I wrote back then and also I appreciate the fact that people want hardcore (no pun intended) laboratory evidence. I hope my writing has somewhat matured since then and when I read this article now, I do somehow cringe and think that maybe my point was conveyed in a slightly sarcastic and harsh way.

Ya right…the people who have been killing men in Isreal planning deadly attackes killing Americans for years are living at whits end in caves. I believe masterbation is wrong, maybe not unhealthy but it is wrong. Sex was meant for a man and a women who ware married. So the biggest problem with masterbation is you have to lust in order to make it happen, Lust and fornication, even though its in your mind, you might as well have done it for real, you did it in your heart.

Masturbation is the most shameful act but people always label it as ‘healthy’ nd ‘its good for the prostate gland’ nd other bullshits. There is 0% benefit from masturbation nd there are good reasons why.The testes in your body are continually producing hundreds of millions of reproductive cells call spermatozoa. These are moved up a tube called the vas deferens to a place called the ampulla where they are mixed with fluids from two membranous pouches called seminal vesicles and the prostate gland. The resultant fluid is called semen. When the seminal vesicles are full a signal is sent to the central nervous system indicating they are ready to be emptied. The rate at which the filling takes place varies greatly from one person to another, depending on such things as diet, exercise, state of health, etc. For some it may be several times a week, for others twice a month and for others, hardly ever.It is normal for the vesicles to be emptied occasionally at night during sleep. This is called a wet dream. The impulses that cause the emptying come from the central nervous system. Often an erotic dream is experienced at the same time, and is a part of this normal process. If a young man has consistently masturbated instead of letting nature take its course, the reproductive system is operating at a more rapid pace, trying to keep up with the loss of semen. When he stops the habit, the body will continue to produce at this increased rate, for an indefinite period of time, creating sexual tensions and pressure. These are not harmful and are to be endured until the normal central nervous system pathway of release is once again established.
So masturbating habit is just an unnatural habit that keeps on affecting ur nervous system if u keep on doing it regularly.only once a week, the reproductive system will work at a slower pace but once a month will be perfect as by then, nature will take its course again.
I am on a run of 8 days now and although I feel great sexual tensions,I know that at the end of 1 month these tensions will be greatly reduced to nothing. So anyone who masturbates regularly-think again man,u r wasting ur valuable self-control.

Tell me you’re kidding. If you truly believe this bullshit then you’re a sad weak minded waste of space. The health blogger: you are a joke. Hair loss? Lower back pain? Memory problems? Really? Sounds like you just pulled that out of your ass, honestly. You lose extremely small amounts of zinc when you ejaculate and eating a small slice of pizza will more than make up for this. You said it yourself, you have no scientific or medical evidence to back up these claim and yet you try to pass it off as propaganda with legitimate factual evidence? Are you serious? Masturbation is completely normal and healthy nonetheless. The female AND male body need to have their seminal fluids flushed and cleaned at least once a week. Everything you wrote in that article is completely absurd. The people who have emailed and contacting you saying they have those symptoms because of masturbation are complete idiots. There is NOTHING wrong with masturbation. Period.

I understand you’ve already stated that this article is not based on any science of any sort, what I do not understand is how you can begin to provide medical advice to people for which you have no authority, no education, and no evidence to back up anything you claim(even if you state it’s not to be used as such, you know damn well that anyone naive enough to read what you write is going to take it as such). This article is nothing short of ignorant, biased, and misguided hyperbole. Masturbation offers neither causation or correlation to any of the medical issues you claim. Masturbation, along with sexual activity, has many healthy benefits. Aside from playing a role in preventing prostate cancer, orgasms, be they self-induced or otherwise, help relief stress and heighten moods. Also, as with anything else in the human body, the less you use your sexual organs, the more they atrophy and cease to function properly. I implore you to produce one shred of verifiable proof that shows that masturbation is unhealthy. Also, as for your zinc commentary…news flash, zinc is water soluble. In case you didn’t know what that means, it means that it dissolves into water and is stored there until excreted through the urinary tract regardless of ejaculation. So from now on, get educated before you spew out such patently false information. You can seriously screw up the minds of impressionable young kids who are trying to find their identity and part of one’s identity is sexual identity. If you go messing with their perception of who they are and what is right, you can scar them for life. Just because you had mommy issues as a child, doesn’t give you the right spread such lies.

Hello, I am a frequent masturbator and have tried to stop many times with no success and now I realize how wrong I was, because of this extremely well researched article, which I am sure was completely written off of a degree in medical science and years of experience and studies, not just a few quick searches in a search engine. You are obviously just so smart and higher above us, and I am sure you have never once masturbated like the rest of us scummy human beings who are sacrificing our health every day with our masturbation habits. Never mind the fact that you gave no concrete evidence that it is bad for us, but thank you, for I now see if only I could be above it all, like you. Thank you, I wish I could withstand temptation…..

    Hello everyone,

I would like to make a contribution to this article and possibly change your point of view.

First off, masturbation is healthy for any individual. The loss of zinc, well, that is not an issue. It is not very difficult to find zinc to replace the lost zinc. We’re talking very small amounts of zinc that do not harm the body in any way. If a man does not masturbate, he may develop sexual problems (dysfunction of the penis). The only issue I see with masturbation is if it is practiced regularly, it may become a bad habit. Marriages may come to an end as a man is discovered by his wife to be watching pornographic material, etc. In any case, if you are a young adult, or if you and your spouse love having sex or masturbating together, there is no reason to say that it is unhealthy. Men require masturbation to stabilize hormones. Imagine ejaculating while you sleep, getting erections in public (not very convenient is it). So again, as a medical practitioner I view masturbation as a healthy act, in both men and women. I must also say that the author of this article should not persuade others or raise eyebrows on certain topics if he/she does not have sufficient evidence to support his/her arguments. So again, MASTURBATE REGULARLY.

    Dr. D’Alfonsa

I speak spanish, so, sorry for my english. I came up with this site after searching for adverse effects of masturbation because of a discussion with some friends in the university.

Im 20, and i masturbated from 14 to 17. Im not religious or something like that, but i stopped because of my own experience. My parents either gave me a nasty view of sex, on the contrary. My dad in the beggining of adolescence always told me that it was healthy to masturbate and completely normal, they were pretty liberal. In the first years i remember to masturbate once a week, it was enough for me, and i couldn’t believe that there was some guys that masturbated every day. Until of course, i became 16. Then i did it 3 or 4 times a week, sometimes 2 times a day. And i started to feel different, seriously. Cold legs, and the skin in my hands sometimes rough, generally tired and bad memory. I knew that i had to diminish the frecuency or stop, at least to see if there was a difference, but i couldn’t. Besides, i thought that it was something normal in adolescence, both, feeling like that and masturbating. I even remember the first time, and year of masturbating, i always noticed that after doing it, i felt my legs weak, and a little tired the day after, i think now that maybe that was one of the reasons that make me do it just 1 a week.

Well, anyway, one time in the summer my brother caught me when i was almost 17, in the moment he didn’t do anything. I’ve always felt admiration for him, he was/is very smart and motivated, he was majoring in math. And 2 days or so after, he told me that i shouldn’t be embarrased, because he too masturbated when he was my age, but added: the people that drops out of university or do mediocre in academics subjects, surely masturbates a lot. I laughed at first, but after i started to considere my own experience from what i see that happens to me, and what i think of others, maybe he wasn’t that wrong. And i knew he told me that in a serious manner, like if it where something that he discovered on his own experience. Right, maybe he didn’t mean that literally, but it was just pointing out the negative effects and he wished that i didn’t suffered from them. It meant a lot to me.

So that was the time that I first really tried to stop. I had tried before, but in my way it wasn’t just the temptations, there was too the believing in society that it was normal and healthy, so i kinda supported on that to feel that i could continue to do it without trouble, after all, it’s something really pleasant so we want to do it. I remember to have a little notebook to anotate the days that i masturbated, yes i know, you will say: lol. But it helped me to see. First i stopped for about 4 weeks, and really i was feeling better, but i couldn’t resist the temptation. After periods like that, i couldn’t continue and the necessity to masturbate was even stronger, so i did it even 3 times a day, 2 or 3 days after that “dry” period. There were 4 periods like that, and later, one day, i told to myself, “i don’t want to take time of my life, energy, resources and thinking in such a useless thing”, and there was some “click” in my head. So, instead of masturbating, i started to meditate with exercises that i took from a book of my dad, that sometime before had tried but couldn’t succeed at it. That was a few months before turning 18, and i didn’t have sex in any form since that time. So, is almost 3 years without sex.

I can tell you, after 4 months of not doing it, i really felt great. I mean, i was a lot more happier and less anxious, my hands didn’t felt rough never, and my legs and hands where like warm, in general i think that i was more in control of my body to say it in some way, and more conscious of it, like when i was more kid. I started to be more retentive like i used to be some time, and have capacity to focus a lot more, so my grades in school were better (but they weren’t mediocre in the past either…) and to me it was a lot more easier to learn. I think that this was caused by meditation and not having sex. In fact, i think that because of not having sex, my head was more “clear” and my body more relaxed and i could meditate.

If i have to say what has changed my life in a big way, i would say not having sex in any form. Now i’m in second year in university majoring in what i want, molecular biology, and until now, i have to say that it has been the most beatiful period of my life. I feel very motivated, calm and aptimist, ready to face any challenge. I think this is the most close that it can get to the so called “happiness”. I now don’t even feel anything when i see a female friend or a girl in the street with a great body, seriously. I think i became a little asexual. But this is not to say it in a negative way, on the contrary, i would never change how i feel now for feeling good having sex with some hot girl, that would be very stupid by my part. It’s like something i read in a book of meditation: “You don’t force yourself to leave everyday pleasures, it just happens”. And i think it happens because you enjoy life, so you dont need those things.

So i wanted to say this in the hope that it will cause the same thing that it did to me. I wont have the balls to say it to my friends, or in some way that it’s not anonymous, sadly, and i think it’s important. I’m not saying that what happenned to me will happen to you, it probably won’t, but let me say that masturbating is an addiction (whoever says otherwhise never tried stopping), that diminish our potential. Yes, maybe there are a lot of factors. Maybe i didn’t eat a balanced diet, maybe my organism was predisponed to that things, i don’t know. But i think it does something, and i’m pretty sure it’s not healthy doing it all days like they say. Most of the people that defend it, it’s because they cant stop, or they are in a cruzade against religion and “medieval thinking”, or they are from the porn industry. Yes, this maybe “medieval thinking”, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Not everything from the past it’s bad or a lie. And to those that say that there are scientific facts that show masturbation is healthy and thats why you should believe it, they just dont understand science. The truth is that there are findings that SUGGESTS that masturbation is good in some things (like stress, but wasn’t stress the epidemy of the new era?, if it were really effective then almost everyone should be happy), but they can’t possible know whether overall it’s good for health. There are thousands of chemical reactions in the body, we still are struggling to understand how tiny reactions in one system can affect other biological systems, we don’t know too how the reward circuit of the brain gets affected, in short, WE DONT KNOW. This kind of studies are almost always proved wrong in the future. There are too a lot of rant how unscientific some “scientific findings” are, or at least the form of conveying them, by some scientists. So my recommendation if you have 13 to 18 years is: dont follow the herd, do what in your inner core believe, do what your own experience shows you. Good luck.

Wow. that was a lot of writing, hope it helps someone.

Your right we can’t trust what these “doctors” say. Ive read countless articles that claimed to be well researched (yeah by atheists!) It’s not healthy. It turns our youth into gays and communists. And that is NOT the american way of life. Anybody who has ever masturbated is a sinner and is going to Hell! I just wish I could get my testicles removed so I could avoid any temptation. It would be the natural thing to do. Okay , I agree with this topic but i think that you , the author are pointing at OM (Over Masturbation ), but you are talking about Mastubation , a usual regular thing that many of us guys do … (Most of us guys ) . Darn , most people don’t do it that much , maybe 3-4-5 times a month witch is healthy (keeps your prostate healthy , also your sperm ((by that i mean the sperm is healthier because it needs to change *NEEDS * )) ) but i think you even scared a few guys :/ . Guys , DONT WORRY , and i mean it , DONT ! . I have talked to the doctor about the masturbation and stuff . He said it’s healthy if you moderate it (like one commentator already mentioned ), and if you are NOT sexually active . So 3-4 , 3-5 times a week is normal and not dangerous for your mind , health , back , penis , being the One-Minut man ;) , but 5-12 times a week , thats considered OM and that my friends , is the reason of One-Minut Men :)

    Peace out .
    And keep it strong :)

This is absolutely ridiculous. The author is, for lack of a better word, a biased idiot. There is absolutely NO conclusive medical evidence to prove that masturbation causes ANY side effects aside from semen/fluid loss (which is kinda the point). Every major medical organization has claimed that masturbation is A) healthy, and B) can be beneficial (prostate health, for example).

Everyone should read the first four lines of this article. It says it all. He has absolutely no evidence and it’s all opinion based. The real shame here is that children will read this and think they’re deviants for masturbating. That disgusts me.

Health Blogger, may you be blessed for your efforts. Ameen. This article was extremely helpful & genuine. You sound to be an excellent student of wisdom and truth.

But one question though, why doesn’t science or for that matter experts in the topic state facts alike? When of course masturbation causes the above mentioned symptoms experienced by almost all.

I was an athlete once, and whensoever I masturbated the day I exercised, I couldn’t workout. I’d feel all the relevant symptoms.

I only once in my life so far achieved victory against masturbation. But that lasted just 40 days. I had been trying ever since to achieve the same level of will power and have failed miserably.

In search to attain mastery against it, I came across your article. I’m extremely ill willed to refrain from many negative activities that are detrimental to one’s health & soul.

If you could shed some light on how to acquire persistent will power it’ll be much appreciated. And may Allah bless you either way. Ameen.

And for those who seek the truth with an open heart and mind: Should consider googling Dr. Zakir Naik, a renowned world orator on Islam and comparative religions. He’s far more rational than any I know of. Alhamdulillah, he has a logical answer to almost everything. He has been blessed with logic and reasoning. One should check out his lectures given on various topics. His lecture are available on YouTube.

I was seriously addicted to masturbation at one point of time. What many men cannot deny is the fact that there is a feeling of regret after ejaculation, especially after masturbating to porn. I regularly hit the Gym. I see that masturbation does indeed relax the muscles & reduce the pump. Whats the point of wasting hours in the gym if you are going to waste all the energy by wanking off ? It has also affected my memory a lot. Now that I have stopped masturbation for 8 weeks now, I feel my muscles are tighter. My concentration & memory has improved. I enjoy reading books now. Everytime I feel like watching porn, I watch body building videos to feel the adrenaline rush. Also, the glow & charm has returned to my face. It used to be dull with sunken eyes due to all the masturbation and late night internet porn. Its simple, Why waste the valuable time God has given us ? Put every single moment to something useful. Trust me, u will feel Good. Although, u might feel a bit frustrated initially during the quitting period. Remind yourself that its only temporary. Take a nap then or watch a movie.

I appreciate the fact that you posted your opinion but I feel it is important to post my opinion even if nobody cares to read this comment all the way down at the bottom.

First off I have to commend you for the fact that you stated that this article is based primarily on opinionated beliefs. I thank you for not being misleading blogger who claims they have scientific evidence, studies, advanced research, and a laboratory in their basement. Regarding your comment on the ejaculation of zinc in men, I have to say that this may be an overstatement. Not necessarily the numbers you gave but the severity you put this loss to be. You stated that this is only a fraction of your Recommended Daily Allowance (11mg), a little under one third to be exact. Well, this would only be a significantly bad thing if:

    1) that person masturbated nearly 5-6 times a day (accounting for the decrease of semen in each ejaculation) since it takes more than a day for a man to refill his prostate

    2) That person didn’t fulfill his RDA of zinc which is hard to do since it is present in plenty of foods and added in others.

Also, you’ve showed little proof in your comparison between lack of testosterone and a man’s lasting during sex. You stated that men with low testosterone (as a result of zinc insufficiency) tend to be quicker in bed. That is actually false. Otis quite the opposite. Low testosterone results in low sex drive. This basically just results in limited arousal. One can engage in sexual intercourse without being aroused causing him to last longer. Women are probably thinking that this is not possible. However, I think most men know that there is a difference between complete arousal and erection where an erection is subconscious and one consciously needs to be aroused. This results in prolonged intercourse (at the will of the female partner too of course). This is also why masturbation before intercourse is a popular idea amongst men. If you were talking about long-term symptoms, then you are clearly mistaken unless either one or two occurred as listed above.

I have seen people write that there are zinc deposits in the brain causing frequent masturbators to loose brain cells resulting in reduced intelligence. Even you would understand that this is obviously a silly statement put together by people of your beliefs in order to sway those who seek the truth. Zinc is stored I INTRACELLULARLY; there is no zinc mine in your brain and the zinc used to make semen is derived DIRECTLY from food consumption that was recently absorbed from the small intestines. It is delivered equally throughout the body.

Even if those effects of masturbation were detrimental, one who engages in sexual intercourse WOULD be exposed to the same effects that you listed. Sixty eight percent of men use condoms when having sex. Unless a two partners were trying to conceive or using birth control or a diaphragm (or just being silly and trying to push their lick with withdrawal), absorption of these minerals would not be possible during sexual intercourse either. Condoms cannot absorb these minerals because if they could, semen would be able to seep through which would just make them inefficient and users would be just as susceptible to STDs.

For those who say masturbation is bad because it is an addiction, they are wrong too. Addiction is something psychological (primarily) that once one starts, is extremely difficult for them to stop. Although this sounds like it fits the case with most masturbators, it is NOT psychological. It is merely a sex drive which is hormonal and uncontrollable (the sex drive; not the masturbation). Those who are against normally do not have as great of a sex drive as those are for it. The reason why one continues to masturbate is the same as why he/she started unlike users of hard drugs where they start for whatever reason (peer pressure, depression, etc.) and continue because of the new addiction. Restraining yourself from your natural (hopefully even you can agree that sex drive is natural) feelings will probably just stress you out causing more issues. I’m not saying that masturbation is healthy by any means. I’m just saying it’s not bad. It’s like picking one’s nose. What could possibly happen? If you don’t masturbate, you probably just have lower levels of testosterone or estrogen and progesterone (even if you think you don’t).

Also, fatigue and sleep problems just counter each other. Pick one but I’m going to go with fatigue but this is not a long term thing. Lower back pain is probably just muscular thing because of rapid arm movement in a normally hunched over position. As I would recommend before any activity one should stretch a little as silly as that sounds. As for thinning/hair loss, this is COMPLETELY genetic. When a man ejaculates there becomes a loss of testosterone. This loss is then temporarily replaced by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the leading component in male pattern baldness. HOWEVER, ones sensitivity to this substance is entirely genetic (maternally). One can masturbate several times a day for his entire life and only experience baldness or thinning if it is present in his genes. Basically, if it’s already in your genes it only slightly speeds up the process. If it’s not, there will be no effect. The “hardness” of one’s erections due to blood pressure which is due to amount of testosterone present in the blood. As I said before, loss of testosterone is only temporary and so is the weak erection. That is why most men go flaccid after ejaculation. This also causes an increase of time one can last during sexual intercourse as I have said before (temporally of course). I can’t really disprove groin/testicular pain but I can’t see how it can be existent in those that masturbate or have sex. Just because it is done with a hand doesn’t mean it cause groin or testicular pain. Lastly, concentration and memory loss is one of those things where if it occurs during masturbation then it must during sex. This was believed because of the depletion of zinc from the brain which, as you can see now, is fallacy.

Bottom line: One’s need to masturbate varies greatly among individuals and just because you don’t doesn’t mean you will have wet dreams (although it is common) or be a wreck from the sexually built up energy but. This is just like if you do you won’t necessarily embarrass yourself in front of your sex partner, become an idiot, or go bald. Masturbation is not healthy but not unhealthy at the same time. There are no benefits or drawbacks to masturbation.

you know, i think everyone here is all partially right. i just started this habit in my freshmen year and every since ive been getting tired and unhappy for no reason.

well i do go to tthe gym often and im very, very, adhd, as in, alot of testosterone, like; i get really hyper, but whenever i am really hyper, im not even tired, because i have sooo much testosterone. but masturbating does make me really tired (i use sometimes to get to sleep)

ive never had pimples before, until this year and my dry skin isnt regenerating as quickly as it used to. ive also been getting increasingly sad for the past year.

i think its because my the”h” in my adhd is going away. and so his masturbating thingy is taking too much testosterone away from me.

so maybe if i just regulate this thing to a few days a month ill be the same hyper and happy person i was.

cuz if i completely stop it, ill either go insane or ensure the continuation of my depression, because too much and too little tesosterone leads to brooding which leads to depression

Seriously, why are you people even bother responding to these trolls?
I don’t know about masturbation being healthy but over-masturbation sure ISN’T.
I say this as an atheist and a sceptical person. You haven’t noticed symptoms? Fine. We are not the same. I have masturbated since the age of 10 to this day,age 22.
There have been 30-60 days overall when I didn’t masturbated. It fu**ed up my dopamine level so I had ZERO motivation throughout the years. My grades went from A to F. There are fu**king proofs of over masturbation is BAD and so is sex. When I went 4 days without masturbation my hands didn’t shake that much (tremor),my lower back didn’t hurt,my face looked much healthier. Now imagine not doing it for a month. If you do it too much and don’t give your body days of rest it will start screwing up the neurotransmitters.WHY DON’T YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT OVER DOING IT NOT SIMPLY JUST MASTURBATING?!
So my troll friends. You won’t go blind and your palms won’t be hairy. That’s stupid.Even I laugh about it.But all the other symptoms are stated right. Why the hell would be THOUSANDS of forumers saying “I’ve masturbated for years and I experience the same symptons and need help to quit it”? For fun, right? You are delusional my troll friends. Just because Mr. Science guy says MASTURBATION IS HEALTHY you blindly believe it.
    watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxrG6QZ-G0M
Now go to 11 minute 20 seconds of the video and listen to it.
All I ask from you delusional, cursing people that if you experience OM symptoms one day please don’t act like hypocritical pieces of ****,so say sorry first then ask for help! Everyone out there suffering from OM or porn addiction stay strong and have a nice day!

Its true, I use to feel fatigue, lack of concentration in studies and was having sleeping problems earlier and every time i ejaculate I was feeling guilty but was unable to get rid of this addiction. But somehow I controlled myself and now its been 3 month I haven’t ejaculated, Noe I can memorize in shorter time, my health improved, I don’t have any sleeping problems and most importantly I am a happy man as I don’t do anything I should feel ashamed of.

Stop masturbating now. Male or female, it’s a severely consequential habit. It won’t kill you, and the effects are entirely recoverable, but the effects while they last are much more serious than most understand. Soon I’ll provide a post all about it on my website. It’s backed mostly be personal experience, and having talked with others about it. You really need to stop, I’m still working on that myself. It has nothing to do with religion. It’s a physical drain. You’ll be happier without it. I know you don’t believe me, but there’s always a way to find out – just stop doing it for a couple weeks and watch. Everything just gets better. I meant, my concentration tripled, my memory was vastly improved, my muscles were much stronger with more endurance, I was mentally much quicker, I felt much better overall emotionally and physically, and I always had energy and charm. I was likeable. When I started doing it more again, all that just dissipated… I tried so hard to deny that it was masturbation and tried to just live life onward thinking it was ME and not my body’s inability to keep up with what I was making it do, but alas, it wasn’t me at all, it was masturbation draining my body severely enough that it couldn’t keep up with my demands. Please… Stop. For the ones you love.

I do not agree with the information presented in this article, since I find much of it to be false, both in terms of fact and in terms of my opinion. What bothers me more though is the many teenage kids who are commenting on this article, are being swayed by the false information and being made to feel guilty for their perfectly normal, healthy habits. I understand that some of the people commenting, including the health blogger, may have been raised in an environment where religion and/or other kinds of discipline taught them that masturbation was a bad, harmful habit, but please include factual information that has been cited before you go off on some crusade like this. It’s wrong to make young people feel bad about something that’s normal just because you don’t agree with it for whatever reason. Please try to consider what I’m saying, despite your opinions.

I am not a scientist or a licensed professional, therefore this is also personal opinion on the matter, but here is my self-educated two cents. The sperm are essentially the most microscopic form of your DNA. I have no hard science to back this up, but it is my own scientific theory that given the make-up and the vitamins and minerals that the sperm and semen are made of, being concentrated and potent immune system components, a constant draining of your most microscopic, all powerful, precursors to ultimate creation, would in theory deprive the male body of somehow (this is the part I can’t prove that happens) the un-released semen, from being the single greatest natural repair mechanism if rotated throughout the body, as opposed to perpetually releasing these omnipotent little guys from your most prized possessions > Your testicles > or the coveted BALLS! for those of you filled with raging testosterone.

I feel terribly sorry for people that read misinformation like this and take what you’re saying at face value. There is no valid basis for the flimsy claims you are making, despite all of the pseudo-scientific babble you wrap it up in. Presenting your case as fact, on a webtsite called ‘thehealthblogger.com’ is misleading, bordering on unethecial. Reading this comment from an anonymous poster frankly demonstrates the harm this false information does…

“plz plz i am feeling so guilty about masturbation i dont know what to do.i masturbated oftenly since i was 10 years old AND IA AM 17 YEARS OLD.and i am worried about my memory problems.I WANT TO KNOW IF I STOPPED WILL I HAVE MEMORY PROBLEMS AND CONCENTRATION PROBLEMS OR EVERYTHING WILL BE AS I NEVER MASTURBATED.AND WHAT IS THE PERIOD OF TIME WILL IT TAKE FOR MY BRAIN TO BE CURED AND I WOULDN’T HAVE THESE PROBLEMS.I NEED A DOCTOR TO REPLY.PLZ”

“mainly due to the fact that many uninformed individuals (no names) like to elucidate their opinions freely and willingly on this subject with very little to no knowledge whatsoever!”

    - What are you basing your claims on aside from your own overactive morality?

Frankly, I think that you should be a ashamed. Masturbation is normal, healthy and is nothing to be ashamed of. Do not dress your own moralistic beliefs up as health advice. It’s wrong.

Get real people! It’s not unhealthy! It releases sexual tension and relieves stress. What crap are you talking about ‘losing minerals e.g. zinc’? You do realise sperm is constantly being produced by the testes right? Regardless of ejaculation it gets broken down anyway and is passed out of the body. Masturbation is normal, animals do it. Yes we’re not animals, but God loves all his creatures equally? Right? Why would he let his creatures sin?

Masturbation itself is not sinful nor unhealthy alone. Fantasizing and pornography IS sinful. Also note this poster did not provide an ounce of evidence to back up their claims. I love the internet.

But anything that is done too much can be unhealthy, and only an individual can decide what is right for them. If you feel you’re doing it too much, then you should try to cut down. If you are completely fine, don’t let this nonsense scare you off.

Sure as heck would rather teens masturbate than engage in premarital and unprotected sex. And frankly, I think it is important to discover yourself sexually before you get married. Sex is very important in a marriage whether you like to admit it or not and a bad sex life can be disastrous.

You have kids on here thinking that there is something wrong with them and you’re telling people they’re losing hair over masturbating. Are you insane? Where is the evidence? I’m surprised you didn’t say that masturbating makes you blind or makes hair grow on your hand.

If you really want to find out for yourself, see a medical professional, not some blogger who DOES NOT LEAVE THEIR NAME.

I think that it is really sad that people are being encouraged to think masturbation is bad for you. I can’t help but feel there are religious influences on this topic and not facts regarding the actual side effects of masturbation. I think psychologically there could be some issues with someone who has to masturbate constantly and it would hurt their personal life before their physical body. I wouldn’t recommend excessive masturbation to anyone and especially not, lets say, a anorexic person because the activity could be strenuous and put them in more danger. I really doubt that sex with someone or without greatly effects the vitamins and mineral loss to a great extent. It’s people like you who continue to burden this world with fears. I lived my life in fear due to religious threats and in the end I only have one life. No one knows what is out there but we do know one thing, that we are here now. Why not just enjoy our lives while we exist? The world doesn’t need people like you convincing teenagers that they are unable to focus in school because they masturbate. You miss so many factors to what you state and claim. I hope you do more research into these subjects before preaching things that you yourself claim are opinions of yours.

Confirmation bias is all you have. You want to believe it’s wrong, so you come up with a gamut of reasons to prove yourself right.

Like so many things, masturbation can become addicting, in the sense that it can create problems in your life. Regular masturbation causing problems? Nonsense. I only ostensibly accept that masturbation is “healthy”; it’s certainly more healthy than trying to never ejaculate. But irrespective of any potential healthy benefits, why can’t it be an ends in itself? It’s enjoyable, and helps me sleep. That’s plenty of reason to rub one out. Speaking of which…

    Great article!

Do not try to convince people the dangers of masturbation. Just let them be unsuccessful in life – while you on the other hand reap the benefits.

Americans blindly follow western “scientific studies” produced by the medical field whos financial future depends on sick people, or prescription sales. Without sick people the medical field (who produces these scientific studies) would be out of business.

Accepting advice from the medical field – is similar to accepting advice from a judge awaiting to sentence you.

Yet these results are blindly followed without questioning the incentive$ motive of the study.

So…just let them suffer, and lead by example. There will be less competition if the world continues losing their vital life-force.

I don’t think this study was done properly, I masturbate 2 to 3 times a day, and have for 10 years now, My memory is strong, my hair is very thick, I sleep with no problems at all, if anything, masturbation keeps me healthy, because when there were times I didn’t masturbate for a few days, it messed me up bad, with random hormonal secretions giving me an erection every time, I say saw a girl shoeplaying or something it drove me crazy, made me jumpy, have sleep problems, like how a person is when they have too much, now when I masturbate regularly everything is normal and my sexual urges are completely controlled, so I don’t believe this study.

i’ve masturbated for 3 years now..at first i felt tremendous shame and guilt whenever my semen went out of my penis..i wanted to quit BUT I COULDN’T..i tried to force to lustful images out of my mind, but i would eventually go on to masturbate..the longest i went without masturbating is 55 days(but back then i was addicted to smoking)..now i dont smoke,i dont drink but i masturbate..but its not an addiction..i generally masturbate 3-4 times per week..and sometimes i can easily get 1-2 weeks without masturbating…

is there any person in this earth who actually quited masturbation successfully???i dont know any..

and since 95% men in this world masturbates, then one really has no other choice..

BUT,masturbating daily is definitely a problem, all the things that are mentioned in this article ONLY OCCURS IF ONE MASTURBATES DAILY..but if a person masturbates once a month or week, then he has absolutely nothing to worry about..because sperm is fully produced in the testis if one stops masturbating for a week..so masturbating will only be healthy if a person does it only once in a week..

i personally am trying to quit masturbation but in reality, this is absolutely not possible and it is indeed a bit foolish…

    Quit Masturbation=GREAT
    Masturbate once a month=VERY GOOD
    Masturbate once a week=Good..

It goes as simple as this. Masturbation is not healthy, and It causes all the kind of tiredness. It actually makes you lose your energy which cause laziness. Also, I want to mention that Masturbation is encouraging you NOT to marry or have sex with females and that’s not natural. Females are existing for males, and males are existing for females. As a matter of fact, most people think that masturbation is same as sexing with females. It’s actually a lot nicer, and healthier. Many people would say that masturbation is healthy, but they didn’t face the punishments when you reach 40 to 60. Just, face the fact. What do you feel after you masturbate? You feel that you are lazy, and tired. You think you actually had sex. All what you done is calling your sperm to have a roll.

I would recommend people to stop this bad habit, and start looking for a girl instead of masturbating. Sexing with females is much different, and that’s what you call it healthy (Safe sex).

Also, the sperm which you are rolling it out is being created for sexing with females. You are abusing it by actually calling it out for no benefits. All what you get is a 3 seconds good feeling, and that’s all.

Masturbation is NEVER healthy, as a matter of fact, It never makes you happy, It has no proteins, It’s not like a dish of salad you eat.

So, whatever, if Masturbation has no positive effects on the person physically, I’m sure It has effects on the person mentally, personally, and It’s not natural if you masturbate in 25 – 40 while you never married. This is really unnatural.

I took a walk in the sun the other day and when I got home, I was tired…so I have decided that they sun actually drains ALL the vitamins from your body and prolonged exposure will cause you to shrivel up and die.

… This is basically what I hear when people make any/all claims. While I think all the ‘reasons not to masturbate’ mentioned here are CRAP, I did want to point towards one in specific, which is the hair loss.

Most problems in your body are chemically related… Hair loss, could be caused from stress, your stress could be caused by a testosterone imbalance, which causes chronic masturbation to help produce the testosterone your body needs (even if just temp). It’s like women craving chocolate during their period because the antioxidant helps to clear their systems…

Your body knows what it wants and that’s why we do what we do. IGNORING cravings/temptation can cause permanent harm to yourself. Talk to a professional about issues and find out how to fix, simple as that. Heck, recent medical studies even say caffeine is GOOD for you…but just like EVERYTHING in life (chocolate/masturbation), it’s all about MODERATION…

RE: Belltalk – You CAN”T mention ‘safe sex’ and then preach about ‘wasting sperm’. Unless the Pope did a condom commercial I’m not aware of, your hypocrisy is +9001. If you wanna get biblical, the bible details a married man laying with his wife in the traditional way…if you’ve even gotten a blowjob, you already burning in hell, so get off your soapbox. Doctors and scientists say masturbation is fine, bible thumpers don’t…whoever you listen to, listen to them, but don’t state opinion like it’s fact…that’s calling lying.

I stopped masturbating 3 weeks ago, and the longest I’ve gone was just over 1 month. But I can tell you the hardest day was the first day I tried not to masturbate (after 6 years of masturbating many times a day).
    Here are some tips:
    1. Try to resist it for one day and then let your self do it for a week. Then try again for one day. Then increase your abstinence to two days and then reward yourself. Eventually it should be 5-7 day abstinence, until you feel ready you can go on indefinatly. I’m in my second year of this process, but it’s getting easier and easier.
    2. The other thing I wanted to mention was having others help you. In my case every time I masturbate I confess to my priest. Of course not everybody has the gift of confession. So for people of other religion or atheist, try talking about it with a friend or your parents (though that could be a bit awkward) or your pastor (I don’t know, you guys (protestants) do that?).
    3. Lastly, do not rush things. It will be a slow process. And once you pass the 3 week milestone, you will have no problem. The reason I started up again was because I was afraid it was unhealthy (to NOT masturbate). Later I was proven wrong. So don’t let all you hard work go to waste.

That is bogus. Hairloss? backpain? there are on the opposite Released every kind of chemical in your body like you said ( though that Heroin part isnt true, thats a whole other chemical), even those Painkilling ones, when you get sexual stimulation. Its Normal to Masturbate, and its a Healthy habit, seeing as it actually makes you happier. That doesnt mean you have to do it 5 times aday, or even once, but its good for you. If not for you, it might be for your partner, seeing as thanks to my girlfriend have done it, I can find every Single spot on her that she likes.
Besides, sexual stimulation releases testosteron in us guys blood, that is the ultimate hair-grower hormone.
